One of the most frustrating parts of the street work, and one that has me second guessing about continuing on: is the BREEDING.

I’ve done this work around the country and breeding in California…and specifically Skid Row is the worst.

Why?

They don’t enforce the ordinance that camping and sleeping on the streets is unlawful (and haven’t for generations) so people can live there for years.

While I’m glad when I can find these puppies and vaccinate them (because it’s either a $2 vaccine or potentially a $2,000 parvo treatment or maybe a death), this cycle is exhausting and aggravating. The people I showcase here are just a microcosm.

Problems are just problems without an action plan. So… for all the CA State officials (straight to the Governor) I stuck my proposal at the end. Hear it.

I want to remind everyone the role I’ve assigned myself in this welfare crisis: Access To Care…which I believe EVERY pet should have.

I could be in a clinic charging unaffordable prices, but I’ve chosen to do it for free in the streets. This is my place.

My colleague does free mobile spay/neuter; I give no-cost care; some rescue, and others beat the drum as loudly as they can to get City Hall to wake up. We’re all working towards the same goal.

I did not intend to undermine anyone’s mission or downplay abuse. And for that I apologize. It’s there, it’s horrible, I’ve intervened when I can, and it needs to be stopped.

But I’m also a voice for the folks doing a pretty damn good job in tough situations. A difficult tightrope.

Until we can create systemic change, what I do know is NOT working together is NOT working.

For any boots on the ground actually doing the work…and enduring the suffering, the smell, the apathy I will always support you.

Better days ahead, I hope.
