On May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam failed above Johnstown, Pennsylvania, releasing 20 million tons of water into the valley. A wall of mud, timber, and debris tore through homes, streets, bridges, and families’ lives. The National Park Service records that 2,209 people died in the flood. Yet from the devastation came an extraordinary wave of compassion, as people across America and around the world sent help to the survivors. Their loss should never become just a number.
