Los Angeles Bat Rescue Rehabilitation - Education - Conservation

04/22/2026

Happy Earth Day from LA Bat Rescue! 🌎🦇 Whether our volunteers are rehabilitating local species in Southern California, or advancing their bat education abroad (thank you for leading an outstanding workshop in Thailand this year!), we’re united by one mission: protecting these beautiful, deeply important animals and the ecosystems they support.

Every bat saved, every myth dispelled, and every person inspired brings us one step closer to a healthier, more balanced planet. Thank you for being part of our community—today and every day. 💚

Thank you Bat World Sanctuary Official for this important reminder as we head into pup season!

If you are in or near Southern California and you find a grounded bat, please make LA Bat Rescue (310-365-5656) your first call! If we’re not able to take in that specific patient, we will happily refer you to a safe local rescuer, and can provide additional guidance.

San Diego Humane Society / Project Wildlife has an excellent record of rehabilitating bats, and is a great resource for those located near San Diego. However, please keep in mind there’s no guarantee that any other SoCal wildlife rescues, animal control agencies, or humane societies will attempt to heal and release the bats they receive, like we do.

This , let’s shine a spotlight on our nocturnal friends! Every donation to Los Angeles Bat Rescue helps provide vital care, rehabilitation, and safe release of bats back into the wild. These incredible creatures play a crucial role in our ecosystem, and with your help, we can ensure they continue to thrive.

Click the links in our bio to donate today! (You can also make a donation via Zelle to: 310-365-5656). Let’s give back to the bats that give so much to our planet. And scroll through to see some of the patients your donations support! 🦇💚

What’s better than a summer evening in Griffith Park? Spending it with and the local bats, of course! We were thrilled to partner with the wonderful Independent Shakespeare Company on August 17th, bringing bat education to the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival. Be sure to catch one of the 3 remaining performances of Doctor Faustus, running tonight through Sunday!

A huge thank you also to our volunteers for this event:

Our team came across a Facebook post about a bat that had been hanging out high up at an apartment building’s outside wall for 24 hours. Since bats may seek shelter in unusual places when temperatures are not ideal, and a storm was approaching, they were asked to kindly provide a Bat B&B until the bat was ready to go on its own.

Four days later, the finder alerted us that the bat had made its way to the bottom of the wall. An LABR team member headed over, and upon arrival realized that the bat was in a very dangerous spot: in the middle of the steps. She also noticed the bat’s big ears—how exciting!! She knew it was a very special bat: a Townsend’s Big-Eared bat.

Only 3 Townsends have been in care in our area in the last 28 years. They are a Species of Special Concern in California. (In decline in most areas of California). Loss of habitat and roost disturbances have impacted their numbers as well as pesticide use, which affects their food sources (moths, flies, beetles, and wasps). This bat was dehydrated and underweight, but was not injured. He spent some time in care gaining weight and getting ready for release, and did very well in “bat rehab.” We found him to be very gentle, and as you can see, full of charisma! He captured our interest and our hearts, and was successfully returned to his home area once he’d made a full recovery.

Happy belated 4th of July from LA Bat Rescue! 🇺🇸

💡 Bats are noteworthy figures in the folklore and spiritual beliefs of many Native American tribes. Among the Diné/Navajo people, the bat is traditionally seen as a helpful mentor figure, a “divine intermediary of the night.” Called Jaa’abaní or Djabani, the bat offers free assistance to humans in need, and carries messages and offerings between the gods and mankind. Jaa’abaní is also associated with the eastern sky, and thus dawn/new beginnings.

The bat guardians depicted here are from a traditional muslin cloth “picture writing,” painted by an unknown Navajo medicine man between 1947-1970. The diamonds on their backs represent the piece of Coyote’s skin that was awarded to Bat after he helped bring down the deceitful deity, Gambler. (Image source: 1stdibs.com)

💡Spread the word: wait until October to prune your trees! Spring/summer are when bats and birds alike have their young, and cutting down fronds and branches during this time can be a death sentence for the families and babies living there. In fact, we have a patient in our care who was orphaned as a pup due to this exact scenario 💔

The Western, Southern, and Northern Yellow Bat all roost in dead palm skirts, their tawny fur helping them blend seamlessly into the leaves. Birds like orioles, sparrows, owls, kestrels, and woodpeckers also call this environment home— and are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (https://www.fws.gov/law/migratory-bird-treaty-act-1918).

Thanks SO much to for driving over 200 MILES to transport this young male Pallid Bat from Joshua Tree to a LABR rehabber.

Thanks also to the team at
for switching into high gear on short notice to perform a life-saving wing operation on him.

The rare Pallid Bat is California’s official “state bat” and a California Species of Special Concern. They eat scorpions and centipedes and pollinate cacti, so they are one of the few bat species that are both insectivorous AND nectivorous!
