The right leash matters.

Big, bulky, heavy leashes offer little to no communication and can actually make the walk harder for both you and your dog. They create distance, tension, and confusion instead of clarity.

Change the leash. Change the walk.

Beagle walking the human…

Zero relevance.

All over the place.

In prey drive .

We put the harness aside and went to the figure 8.

Everything shifted.

Calm.

Clear.

Connected.

This is not about control.

It is about communication through the leash and the dog understanding what leash pressure is all about.

When the leash makes sense, the dog can settle into the walk and the human can finally breathe.

If a client insists on a harness, I will always meet them there.

But in almost every case I see, the figure 8 or slip lead creates a completely different conversation.

Happy human.

Relaxed dog.

Forward movement together.

That is the walk.

REBEL!
One of the most important relationships starts with the walk.
I get so many calls from clients who are frustrated on the walk and ready to give up.
Sometimes the shift is simpler than you think. Changing the tool, leash or collar, and more importantly, creating relevance through the leash.
After all, that is what the leash is. A communication tool between you and your dog.
From frustration to a dialed in walk takes time, patience, and consistency. Stay with it.
Happy Pack 🐾

I love working with dogs that are scared and insecure about pretty much everything.

This little dude was not sure if he was staying in the family or not. He has been passed around so many times that the world did not feel steady. When a dog does not feel secure in their place, everything can feel threatening. Sounds, people, new environments, even simple transitions.

Confidence building is real work. It is structured. It is intentional. It is earned in small, consistent moments.

We focused on clarity, calm leadership, predictable routines, and helping him succeed in manageable steps.

It was a pleasure working with these incredible humans who showed up for him fully. That is what changes everything.

Now Kona gets to exhale.
Now he gets to stay.
Now he gets to grow.

And that is the best part of this work.

A friend stopped by today to show me his new rescue pup.
The dog had a harness on attached to a flexi leash.
It was killing me. I had to do a quick fix.
Needless to say, we will be doing some sessions together.
The way I see it, a flexi lead is zero communication with a dog on a walk. Maybe, just maybe, if you wanted to practice recall. But there better leashes for that too.
A walk should be connection. Clarity. Leadership.
Not twenty feet ahead of the human making all kinds of decisions with zero communication and relevancy.

Meet Hazel 🤍
A young Cavapoo pup learning all about pack drive, relationship, and relevancy.

Hazel is doing an amazing job, and huge credit to her human for really showing up for the process. This is what happens when guidance, consistency, and connection come together.

So proud of this team. 🐾✨

Life for dogs in this small Mexican beach paradise is stellar.
Dogs cruise freely with their humans, often only identifiable by a string or collar.

There is little conflict. Off-leash dogs meet daily—on corners, in mercados, at cafés—and aggression is rare.

What you see instead is communication:

• psychological pressure
• posturing
• play bows
• calming signals
• quiet agreements about space

No one is micromanaging. Dogs negotiate and move through the world as social animals.

It makes you reflect on dogs, humans, and environment—how much behavior back home is shaped by tight leashes, tension, limited exposure, human anxiety, and lack of movement.

Here, dogs live more like dogs—free, social, expressive, and surprisingly peaceful.
Not perfect, not always safe—just natural. And there’s a lot to learn from watching it.

At the core of every great dog–human partnership is relevancy.

When your dog sees you as someone worth listening to—someone who provides information, direction, and safety—everything changes.

Consistency builds communication.
Communication builds trust.
And trust builds the relationship we all want with our dogs.

But here’s the honest part: this isn’t always easy.
Not for every dog owner… and not even for every trainer.
Every dog is different. Some relationships take longer, some behaviors feel harder, and sometimes the work is uncomfortable.

But when you stay committed—when you keep showing up—the result is always worth it.
That deep connection, that mutual understanding, that “we’re in this together” feeling…
You feel it in your whole body.

There’s real value in having dogs who know how to be neutral and mellow when someone walks through the gate. Not every greeting needs to be a celebration — especially when guests are balance-compromised or simply moving a little slower.

Teaching calm, thoughtful behavior at thresholds isn’t just good manners — it’s a form of respect and safety. A grounded dog helps everyone feel more at ease.
