Many pet owners associate heartworms with summer, but mosquitoes remain active in Central Texas year-round. That means dogs and cats remain at risk long after the hottest weather has passed.

Heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquito bites and can cause serious damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. In dogs, treatment can be lengthy and expensive. In cats, there is no approved treatment, making prevention especially important.

Many Texans think snake season ends with summer, but warm fall temperatures keep snakes active throughout September and beyond. Central Texas is home to four venomous snakes: ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ง๐š๐ค๐ž๐ฌ, ๐œ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ก๐ž๐š๐๐ฌ, ๐œ๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ง๐š๐ค๐ž๐ฌ. Curious pets often encounter snakes while exploring trails, brush piles, woodpiles, rocky areas, or near ponds and stock tanks.

Most pets are bitten on the face, neck, or legs. Signs may include swelling, pain, puncture wounds, bruising, weakness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, or sudden collapse. Even nonvenomous snakebites can cause painful wounds and infection.

โ€ข Keep pets leashed on walks and hikes

โ€ข Avoid tall grass, brush, and rocky hiding spots

โ€ข Use extra caution at dawn and dusk when snakes may be active

โ€ข Never approach or attempt to identify a snake if your pet has been bitten

If you suspect a snakebite, keep your pet calm, restrict activity, and seek veterinary care immediately. Prompt treatment can significantly improve outcomes.

Sheyenne graduated from McLennan Community College's Veterinary Technology Program and is working toward earning her Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) credential. Her passion for animal care, dedication to learning, and enthusiasm for the veterinary profession make her a wonderful addition to our clinic.

Fireworks & Fear: What You Need to Know Dogs and cats have incredibly sensitive hearing, and the loud, unpredictable booms of fireworks can trigger intense anxiety. Keep in mind, that fireworks are meant to resemble a life-threatening situation. Some pets may tremble, hide, bark excessively, or even try to escape. Itโ€™s not just the noiseโ€”flashes of light and the smell of smoke can also be overwhelming.

๐Ÿพ ๐Œ๐ž๐ž๐ญ ๐„๐š๐ซ๐ฅ ๐†๐ซ๐ž๐ฒ! ๐Ÿพ

Some of you have already met Earl Grey, but many may not know his incredible story.

Just a few short weeks ago, he was found right beyond our parking lot as a tiny kitten weighing ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ง 8 ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐žsโ€”small enough to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand.

Since then, he's been growing up with us! Through countless bottle feedings, lots of care, and plenty of love, Earl Grey has gone from a fragile little kitten to a healthy, happy kitten now weighing over 1 pound!

Earl Grey is always ready to greet visitors, soak up attention, and make new friends wherever he goes.

We're excited for him to continue making himself at home around the clinic and become one of the first friendly faces you see when you visit us. โค๏ธ
