As our pets get older, they may need a little extra help staying comfortable—especially as temperatures start to rise.

Senior pets are more likely to experience conditions like arthritis, which can make movement harder and limit their activity. And as the weather warms up, heat and humidity can make those aches and stiffness even more noticeable.

𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐲𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬:
• Slowing down on walks or less interest in play
• Trouble getting up or lying down
• Stiffness, limping, or hesitation on stairs

These signs can be easy to miss, but they may indicate your pet isn’t as comfortable as they used to be.

𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞

Today, we pause to remember and honor the men and women of the United States military who gave their lives in service to our country and the pursuit of freedom. Their courage, sacrifice, and devotion will never be forgotten.

As we reflect, we also remember the many who served alongside them—including the animals who faithfully stood beside our troops.

One of those remarkable stories is 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐲, a tiny 4 pound Yorkshire Terrier who served with Allied forces in the Pacific during World War II. Though small in size, her impact was extraordinary. Smoky flew on combat missions, survived more than 150 air raids, and even helped save countless lives by pulling a communications wire through a narrow 70 foot pipe—preventing dangerous excavation work under enemy threat.

Beyond the battlefield, Smoky became known as one of the first documented therapy dogs, visiting wounded soldiers in military hospitals and lifting their spirits through comfort, companionship, and simple joy.

While Memorial Day is dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service, Smoky’s story reminds us of the many forms of service that support those heroes. She never stopped serving—continuing her work helping veterans and hospital patients long after the war.

Today, we honor:

❤️ The families who carry that sacrifice
❤️ And the loyal companions, like Smoky, who stood beside them

Their courage, devotion, and sacrifice—human and animal alike—helped shape and protect the freedom we cherish today.

𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡!

As we come to the end of April we are going to dive just a little deeper into a silent but serious threat to your pet’s health: 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬? Heartworms are parasitic worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of affected animals. They can grow up to a foot long and cause severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬? Heartworms are transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Just one bite is enough to infect your dog or cat. While dogs are natural hosts, cats can also suffer from heartworm disease—even indoor pets aren’t safe from mosquitoes!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝? In dogs, heartworms can multiply and clog the heart and lungs, leading to fatigue, coughing, weight loss, and even death if untreated. In cats, symptoms can be more subtle but still dangerous—vomiting, breathing difficulties, and sudden death are possible outcomes.

𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲 Treating heartworm disease in dogs involves months of medication, strict activity restriction, and potentially fatal complications. For cats, there’s no approved treatment—only supportive care. Prevention is not just easier—it’s essential.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞, 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 Monthly oral or topical medications are available to protect your pet. These preventatives kill immature heartworms before they can cause harm. There are options that also cover flea & tick protection. Talk to us about choosing the best plan for your pet. They’re easy to administer and a vital part of your pet’s wellness routine.

With millions of bites each year - awareness matters.
𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧.

Any dog can bite. Most bites are 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 when we understand dog body language, supervise children, and avoid startling or approaching unfamiliar dogs.

Know the signs of fear or stress, 𝐚𝐬𝐤 before petting, and keep interactions calm and safe.
𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 children to ask before petting, give dogs space when they’re eating or sleeping, and never leave young children alone with any dog.
Prevention starts at home.
