When Gerald Ford was given a golden retriever named Liberty as a surprise in 1974, she became a beloved fixture of his White House and one of the most photographed presidential pets of the era. Beyond her role as a family dog, she took on a duty that never appeared in any official schedule, helping the president manage the endless stream of Oval Office meetings.
Ford, it turned out, had worked out a small piece of stagecraft using his own dog. When a meeting went on longer than he wanted and he was ready to move on, he would give Liberty a discreet signal from across the room. The cue was subtle enough that whoever he was talking to would not notice it happening.
On that signal, Liberty would rise and amble over to the guest, tail wagging and manner entirely friendly. She presented herself as nothing more than a sociable dog looking for attention. The interruption did exactly what Ford intended, breaking the conversation's flow and giving him a natural reason to stand, greet the dog, and end the meeting, since nobody could take offense at a friendly retriever.
The charm of the trick was that it worked precisely because it did not look like a trick, and visitors delighted by the dog rarely suspected they were being shown the door. Liberty went on to have a memorable White House life of her own, including giving birth to nine puppies in the residence in 1975. Her talent for ushering guests out remains one of the more ingenious details of Ford's presidency.
