HELP! The power went out and I have reptiles! What do I do?
π¦ First off, Don't Panic! Most of the time, the outages only last for a couple of hours at a time, and it's okay if your house cools down a little. If it looks like your power will be back up and running soon, just leave your reptile where he or she is in their enclosure, and try to insulate the room and the tank by covering it with towels or blankets (taking the lamps off first just in case).
π¦ DON'T feed your reptile if you're worried about lasting outages or that your house may remain cold! Reptiles require warmth for at least 4 hours after ingesting food in order to digest, and feeding a reptile in cold weather may cause more harm than good. We promise, they can wait a day or two!
π¦ Commercial hand warmers from your local convenience store will work in a pinch! *Just make sure these are used in a well ventilated space and that they are covered so your animal does not come in direct contact with them.
π¦ Use your car. If you have a running vehicle with heat, you can snuggle up with them inside in a pinch. Use portable carriers, clipping/locking storage bins or even tied off pillow cases to keep your scaled family secure while you hang out in the cab for a while. It's a good idea to make sure they aren't left unsupervised!
*If you have an extension cord and a power inverter, you can even use your car to plug in a temporary heat source for your critter.
π¦ Contact friends or relatives! In a worst case scenario, ask someone who you know has power if they can board your reptile for a few days while you wait for the power to come back on!
