New World Screwworm ๐๐จโ ๏ธ
What is NWS:
A larval infestation of maggots from eggs laid, usually in open wounds, by the New World Screwworm fly. Unlike house fly maggots that feed on dying tissue, these larvae will consume living flesh as well.
How concerned should you be:
-Four cases have emerged in Texas at the border with Mexico in the last week.
-The larvae are not cold tolerant, and pupation in the soil ceases at temperatures of โ45ยฐF (7ยฐC). The risk for sustained year-round transmission is thus limited to warmer regions.
-There is a risk during the summer months of transmission in Colorado with people traveling to and from areas of possible infection.
-While livestock are the main concern, there is a risk to dogs and cats who have open wounds or who spend a lot of time outside. There is a risk to humans, but it is very low.
What can you do to protect your pets:
-If your pet has any wounds, including surgical incisions, prominent skin folds, or even allergic skin disease or infection, they should not be left outside for long periods of time. Keep any wounds or lesions clean.
-Using a monthly preventative for fleas and ticks from the isoxazoline class, including Credelio which is now labeled to treat NWS in dogs. **These medications do not prevent the infection but will kill any larvae that hatch within 24 hours.
Report any suspicious lesions or maggots to your veterinarian.
If your dog is already on Credelio Quattro โ you're ahead of the curve. If they're not, now is a great time to talk to us about making the switch.
