This past 3 weeks have been very stressful for the team and I. Pippa has stayed with us multiple times before, but for this extended stay she was diagnosed with pancreatitis and has declined with her appetite and showing her age extra.

As a senior, we have to keep a close eye on her but seeing her struggle with appetite was extremely stressful for us. We were determined to keep her healthy for her owners return. We tried 10-15 different types of foods because she would eat something once, get sick of it, and want something new.

I want to shout out our amazing staff here because this meant a LOT of time hand feeding and encouragement. In the last clip, the girls found out if you sing to her, she got excited enough to eat something. This is The Cottage difference and it makes me so proud to have such amazing staff who cares SO deeply about your pets.

For exercise times, it’s been ridiculously hot and although Pip likes to sunbathe in her corner we were getting worried about her. I put a cooling mat with an umbrella over her spot just to make sure she was extra comfortable.

We are so happy that Pippa made it back home to her family this morning. It took an army but it was SO worth it. We feel so grateful her humans found us and trust us with her care.🩷

Addressing the current tragic and heartbreaking recent events circulating:

Unfortunately it is pretty common that these kinds of news stories break of pets passing away at boarding facilities. I can’t even imagine the loss the pet owners are experiencing and it makes me absolutely sick.

No, caring for dogs is not easy. However, as an owner I have a HUGE responsibility in making sure that every single dog under my roof is safe and healthy. Sleepless nights at the vet at 1 in the morning for allergic reactions, coming down to the kennel at midnight to tweak the temperatures so they are perfect, constantly checking my cameras to make sure everyone is safe. I do NOT take caring for people’s babies lightly.

I understand freak things happen out of my control, (bloat, the dog ate a sock the day before, old age, etc), but the complete negligence of these horror stories puts a horrible reputation on reputable kennels who do pour their blood, sweat, and tears into being a home away from home.

My life REVOLVES around your pets and I want everyone to know that when your pets are here, you can have FULL trust in our ability to keep them safe.

Prayers go out the families dealing with the loss and tragedy. 🤍

Adopt this beautiful girl!!!

🐾Mara Jade🐾

Mara sure enjoyed her last 5 month stay in a foster home, but, unfortunately, for this girl, all good things must come to an end. She's found herself back in a boarding facility (albeit a wonderful one) awaiting her forever humans to find her. Can you please help her by giving this post a share?

Mara is a 5-year-old, 68 lbs, Shepherd mix of sorts. She's house trained, a professional snuggler, and lover of a good game of fetch and "tear up the cardboard." Mara originally came to MHCR in 2021 as a young pup after she was found abandoned on the side of the road during the hurricane Ida evacuations. She was quickly adopted and spent the next few years thinking life was perfect....until it wasn't. Mara lost her forever home because she didn't enjoy sharing her humans with the resident dog. Mara's family decided she must go and since foster homes without other dogs are rarer than an honest politician, she ended up in boarding. Luckily, she DID find a foster home after a few short weeks and thoroughly enjoyed her time there. Until now. Unfortunately, life changes happen and Mara has again found herself in need. While Mara seems to be the world's most unlucky pup, we have to remember she did not perish in the hurricane, she found true love once, and a rare only dog foster home once, too.....we just know she can find true love again, we just have to put it out into the universe.

That's where you come in. Please share this post. Please share Mara's story in hopes she can find her true forever home (or even an only dog foster home would do). Links to our website for adoption & foster applications are included in the comments below.
