In a 1943 copy of “Care of the Dog” by Will Judy is where you can find the Dogs Bill of Rights. This is a book in my personal collection that I picked up from the free book boxes at in Derry NH. It originally sold at the price of $1.50. This was an amazing find.

Dog’s Bill of Rights

•I want one large fresh bone each week for my dessert; I promise not to bury it in the flower pot.

•I want clean water in a clean dish twice daily.

•I want a dry, draftless place for sleeping.

•I want a collar that doesn’t choke me and isn’t so loose it catches on my ears.

•I want a quiet place in the basement on the Fourth of July.

•I want every boy softly reprimanded who throws stones at me or twists my ears.

•I want folks to believe in my wagging tail
and pleading eyes.

•I want all persons to keep in mind that I do with my mouth, most things they do with their hands; so, they needn’t he afraid of a dog’s teeth.

•I want to be treated kindly, just as I treat children and all those in distress.

•I want my mind to he trained so that I can be of the fullest service.

•I want to be considered one of the family, for I will give my life to protect it.

•I want my master to be my god and to act the part.

Signed: For ALL dogs Fido.

‼️NEW BAND MEMBER‼️
Creed is a three year old rescue who has some low confidence. His lack of confidence mainly shows when he meets new people, he doesn’t enjoy their approach and tries to flight away.

Creeds owners reached out to get started with some private training sessions to work on his issues at home with the goal of him opening up enough so he can enjoy summertime adventures with his family.

Welcome to the crew Creed!

POV: you have 360° vision and just saw the sky for the first time.

I swear jumping spiders process the world like tiny aliens. She gives me “Rocky” vibes from Project Hail Mary. 😆

One minute this girl is climbing cork bark in her enclosure, the next she’s jumping high to stare up at clouds like she just discovered another planet.

The amount of curiosity packed into something this small is actually insane. With 8 eights, and some built in wide angle lenses, I’m fairly sure she did!

Spring is finally showing up in Southern NH, which means longer walks, trail days, patio hangs, road trips, and more time out in the world with your dog.

But before the busy season hits full swing, ask yourself this. Is your dog actually ready for those adventures?

Can they settle around distractions? Walk politely on leash? Stay neutral passing dogs and people? Come when called? Relax in public spaces without becoming overwhelmed?

If not, it’s time for you and your dog to learn a new skill!

Offbeat Canine Training offers private in-home lessons and drop in training services throughout Southern New Hampshire, tailored to your dog, your goals, and your real day to day life. Whether you’re starting fresh with a puppy, preparing for summer outings, or working through behavior challenges, now is the perfect time to start building the habits that make adventures possible.

Let’s get your dog ready for spring and summer the right way.

Kal is a dog that I have known for a while, and have been able to work consistently over the last few years through drop in services. One of his owners, Alex, has been putting in the WORK with her degree and finally finished. This was the first time we have ever taken Kal to a public park. (They haven’t either due to his reactivity)

When we first started, seeing another dog could pull a full grown person right to the ground. Today we walked into Benson’s Park and within minutes passed another reactive dog head on. Kal stayed in the game, worked through the moment, and made really solid choices.

A huge part of success with dogs like this is preparation. Before we even entered the park we spent time in the parking lot in the shade letting Kal decompress from the car ride, work obedience drills, and burn a little energy through structured play. That foundation matters. If we allow all that excitement to guide our dog through a new environment, we are going to have a hell of a time trying to ask for good choices.

The second clip is one of my favorite moments from the session. We randomly ran into another trainers student working their own dog, and they were kind enough to help us with a few neutral laps.

This time Kal was working with his owner and chose to engage with her instead of locking onto the other dog. That’s the kind of progress people overlook because it can seem “small” from the outside, but for dogs like Kal, those choices are huge.

No reactions. No explosions. Just good handling, clear communication, and a dog making better decisions.

And after all of those wins, Kal earned the chance to decompress a bit on the long line and enjoy some fetch in the field.

This is what real training progress looks like. I’m so proud of you Kal!

LIFE SAVING SKILLS WITH FRANK.

One of the first things I work on with dogs in a new home is threshold manners. Stairs, doorways, garages, gates, car doors. Places where dogs tend to make impulsive decisions.

In this reel Frank is practicing waiting at every level of his split entry staircase, holding position at the garage door, and learning to stop and move with intention instead of just charging forward because a door opened.

People often think obedience is just about “commands,” but skills like this are safety.

A dog that can pause at a threshold is less likely to:
• tumble down stairs
• bolt out a front door
• rush into a garage or street
• blast through people carrying groceries, kids, or guests
• make unsafe decisions in moments of excitement

Frank is learning that movement happens with guidance, not impulse. We build these behaviors in calm moments so they hold up during chaotic ones.

This is the kind of training that becomes part of everyday life.
