TRAINING TIP TUESDAY 🐾👶🏼

Expecting a little one? Start preparing your dog before baby comes home!

Bringing home a baby means lots of new sights, sounds, smells, and routines for your dog to adjust to. A little preparation ahead of time can go a long way in helping your dog feel more comfortable with the changes!

🐾 Here are a few ways to get started:

* Introduce baby gear: Let your dog explore the stroller, car seat, swing, and other baby items at their own pace. Reward calm, relaxed behavior.
* Practice stroller walks: Take your dog on walks with the empty stroller before baby arrives so they can learn to walk calmly alongside it.
* Play baby sounds: Gradually introduce recordings of baby crying, cooing, and other new noises at a low volume while pairing them with treats.
* Practice new routines: If walk times, feeding schedules, or sleeping arrangements will change, start making those adjustments before baby comes home.
* Teach helpful skills: Practice cues like place, leave it, and settle to help your dog navigate everyday moments around the baby.
* Create a safe space: Give your dog a comfortable area where they can rest undisturbed and choose to take a break when they need one.

Remember, the goal isn’t just to get your dog used to baby gear. It’s to help them feel safe, build positive associations, and prepare them for the changes ahead.

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY!!!

It’s 9:30 AM. I’m cozied up on the couch with a hot cup of coffee, snuggling my healthy, milk-drunk baby, while the dogs lay at my feet bird-watching out the window. 🍼☕️🐶

And then, to top it all off, I get an update like this from a client. 🥹

The little moments, the happy clients, the life I get to live… it doesn’t get much better than this.

Puppies don’t automatically know how to relax, settle, or entertain themselves. Teaching them to calmly settle on their own helps build independence, encourages emotional regulation, and prevents them from relying on you for constant entertainment.

Training Tip Tuesday: Practice Recall with a Long Line!

Want to build a stronger recall without letting your dog off-leash before they’re ready? A long line is your best friend!

A 15–30 ft long leash gives your dog room to explore while allowing you to safely practice coming when called.

Pro tip: Don’t wait until your dog is distracted or too far away to respond. Start in a low-distraction environment and build up slowly. The goal is to make coming back to you rewarding!

Remember: A reliable recall takes time, consistency, and practice. A long line helps you build those skills safely before introducing off-leash freedom.

TRAINING TUESDAY: a ~quick fix~ to stop the jumping!

Does your dog turn into a kangaroo the second they greet someone? Try this simple leash technique!

When practicing greetings, step on your dog’s leash so they have just enough room to stand or sit comfortably, but not enough slack to launch themselves at the person.

Then reward calm behavior — four paws on the floor = attention and praise!

This helps prevent your dog from rehearsing the jumping behavior while giving them a clear opportunity to make the right choice.

💡 Remember: The goal isn’t to hold your dog down — it’s to safely manage the environment while teaching them what to do instead.

Your dog doesn’t always need to be doing something to earn a reward.

Caught your dog calmly lying on their bed?
👀 Looking at you instead of barking?
🐶 Relaxing while you’re busy?

Reward it!

Dogs repeat behaviors that get reinforced — so if you want a dog who can settle, relax, and exist calmly, start rewarding those moments before they become a problem.

Don’t just train the behavior you ask for.
Train the behavior you want them to choose. 🐾
