It's indigenous people's day, and I didn't know this about a Xolo dog.

Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, and we want to honor a 10,000-year partnership: Indigenous peoples and their dogs.

Dogs arrived in the Americas alongside the first peoples, over 10,000 years ago. They hunted, hauled, stood watch, and were family. The Xoloitzcuintli was sacred to the Mexica, believed to guide souls through the underworld. And for thousands of years, the Coast Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest carefully bred the woolly dog — a small, fluffy dog whose soft undercoat was sheared and woven into ceremonial blankets. These dogs were cherished: fed salmon, combed regularly, and kept on islands apart from other dogs.

Colonization nearly erased these ancient lineages. Genetic research shows the pre-contact dogs of the Americas rapidly disappeared after Europeans arrived — through disease, persecution, and displacement. The Salish woolly dog is extinct; only a single pelt survives, a dog named Mutton who died in 1859, now held at the Smithsonian.

The bond between people and dogs on this continent is ancient, deep, and Indigenous. Every time we train with patience, kindness, and respect, we honor a partnership that began thousands of years before us.

It was 1994. I knew who I was since 1986, but I finally came out to everyone in 1994. And they're like, "duh". I no longer like pizza. I rode a 1979 Kawasaki 440ltd. I also had a 1986 Pontiac Sunbird. I'm grateful for my supportive family, friends, everyone I've dated with two exceptions. Happy National coming out day.

The day started out pretty rough because I was reminded of the time my horrible partner/manager told a new puppy parent that I was too sick to meet her. She had been waiting months to meet. Her schedule, my schedule and I was giving her a discount because she was a client referral... No one else would meet her, she claimed. I don't know why people were afraid of that side of town. ANYWAY, my horrible partner/manager told me she had cancelled and that our friend Margarita had two extra tickets to some murder mystery thing on the beach. So we went. I posted about it. The client found out and was very hurt. Why would I want to marry that type of person? Then my coworker recommended a great book. It's a great book to read during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The rest of the day flew by. Packing and listening with one earbud.
