When Louie the dog didn't return home at dinner time one Saturday afternoon, his family began to worry something might have happened to him.

The 12-year-old sheepdog lived with Marolyn Driver’s parents in Alexandra, New Zealand. He was an arthritic old farm dog who already had difficulty walking.

Then, around 6 p.m., Louie finally appeared at the end of the driveway. He was limping, puffing heavily and so exhausted that he collapsed near the doorway.

His family rushed to check on him. That's when they noticed something attached to his collar: a small piece of cardboard with a handwritten message.

“Louie’s the hero of the day. He lead me to Maddy [the neighbour’s dog] in distress, stuck under a branch pile. Cheers Rob.”

Suddenly, his mysterious disappearance made sense.

Louie had gone to help his best friend.

Maddy belonged to Rob, a farmer who lived about a mile away. The two dogs were inseparable, with Maddy visiting Louie every afternoon around 4:30 to collect him before they headed off together to play.

But on this particular day, Maddy had gotten herself trapped beneath a pile of branches.

When Rob returned home from a shopping trip, he found Louie waiting for him. The dog was determined to get his attention, and Rob eventually followed him.

Louie led him straight to Maddy.

And he didn't stop there. The elderly dog even helped dig his friend out from under the brush.

By the time Louie finally made it home, his heroics had clearly taken everything out of him.

“I thought, ‘where has he been? What has he done?’ I immediately thought the worst,” his owner, Francie Diver, recalled.

Instead, the family discovered that their arthritic old farm dog had spent the afternoon doing something extraordinary: helping save his best friend.

The next day, Rob and Maddy stopped by to visit. And despite everything he had been through, Louie immediately perked up when he saw Maddy.

His family couldn't help but smile.

That old dog might have had arthritis and struggled to walk, but when his friend needed him, Louie somehow found the strength to be there.

Old dogs really do have a few tricks left in them. ❤️🐾
