Leash pulling often continues for one simple reason: it works. Every step your dog gains while pulling teaches them that a tight leash gets them where they want to go.

Here’s how to begin changing that pattern:

1️⃣ Stop when the leash becomes tight.
2️⃣ Wait for your dog to release the tension or check in with you.
3️⃣ Reward them beside your leg when the leash is loose.
4️⃣ Begin moving again.
5️⃣ Repeat consistently—especially around distractions.
