Looking for a unicorn home (or homes) for some very special older dogs ❤️🐾
I know… “unicorn home” sounds a little dramatic, but these dogs have some very specific needs, and I am determined to find the right match rather than just a home.
I am looking for homes for several older Transylvanian Hounds, currently 5 years old. They are healthy, active, and have many good years ahead of them.
Ideally, I would love for the two sets of males to stay together because they have been companions for years. They have always lived together and have that built-in bond that comes from growing up side-by-side.
There are currently four males being considered for placement:
🐾 Two bonded male pairs
• Each pair includes one intact male and one neutered male
• One pair is brothers — Gondos and Gabos
There is also a possibility of a third placement for the absolute right home:
🐾 Eden (female) and Imre (male)
• Both are fixed
• They are already house dogs and are much easier to integrate into a home environment
• I would only consider placing them if the perfect situation came along — possibly a quieter home or with older adults who would enjoy their companionship.
The boys have been “overlooked middle children” — and honestly, I’m not sure why. They were wonderful pups, but for whatever reason, they were not the ones chosen. Now I want to make sure they get the chance to have their own humans who truly appreciate them.
A little about their background:
They have been outdoor dogs, living in converted horse stalls on 5-acres in the rural hills of Northern California. Because of that, they are not well socialized to the busy noises and chaos of city life. They are not “broken” — they simply have not had the same experiences as a typical house dog.
Once they trust you, they are sweet, affectionate dogs. But they need someone who understands that trust is earned, not demanded.
They do walk on a leash, but they are not highly practiced. They will need patience, consistency, and someone willing to let them adjust at their own pace.
(Please remember the 3-3-3 guideline when bringing a new dog home:
🐾 3 days to decompress and begin to understand that their world has changed.
🐾 3 weeks to learn your family’s routines and expectations.
🐾 3 months (or sometimes longer) to truly begin feeling secure and comfortable.)
A quick note: these are not “free dogs.” ❤️ They are purebred Transylvanian Hounds registered with AKC FSS, and there will be a purchase fee. They are being placed as companion dogs to the right homes, not as breeding prospects. The fee is reduced because they are older, they are not fully trained household dogs, and because they will need someone willing to give them the time, patience, and guidance they deserve.
I am not looking to make money on these placements — I am looking for the right humans.
One of the males, Gondos, is the father of the I Litter.
Their ideal home:
✅ A patient person or family who understands shy/under-socialized dogs
✅ A large, SECURELY fenced yard (these are active hounds!)
✅ Someone who wants a companion, not just a dog in the backyard
✅ Someone willing to allow them the time and space to become comfortable
A note about children: These dogs have not been raised around children, and they are not accustomed to the energy, movement, and unpredictability that can come with young children. Because of that, a home with young children would likely not be the best fit for them. This is not because they are aggressive or unfriendly — it is simply about setting them up for success. They need a calm, predictable environment where they can build confidence and trust at their own pace.
I do have one firm requirement: they are not to be taken to dog parks or doggie daycare.
Why?? Not because I disagree with the idea of dogs socializing. The concept is fine. My concern/dislike is the lack of control and responsibility that usually comes with those environments. These dogs need thoughtful, controlled introductions and experiences.
I highly recommend joining Sniffspot (www.sniffspot.com) and finding a securely fenced private property near you where they can safely explore, sniff, and enjoy being dogs.
A note about men: Because I live alone, these dogs have had very limited exposure to men throughout their lives. As a result, men should expect the dogs to take longer to build trust than women. This has been my experience, as well as the experience of some families who have purchased older puppies from me. Once trust develops, they form wonderful relationships, but they are not likely to become "instant best friends." Patience, consistency, and allowing the dog to approach on his own terms will go a long way. These are dogs who don't give their hearts away in the first five minutes. They believe trust is something that's earned, and once you've earned it, it's something very special.
Location and transportation:
Because of their age, their rural upbringing, and the fact that they have not been exposed to the level of noise, activity, and unfamiliar environments that many dogs experience, I am not willing to place them in homes that require air travel.
This is not because they cannot adapt — these dogs are capable and resilient — but I know them well enough to understand that flying would be such an overwhelming experience and could create unnecessary stress during an already major life transition. Their journey to their new home needs to be as calm, predictable, and low-stress as possible.
Getting still photos of them has been a challenge — not because they don’t want attention (they usually come up to the camera/phone wanting to know what it is, following me as I walk backwards to get a decent picture, lol), but because there is always another scent to investigate, another corner to explore, and another adventure waiting. They are hounds, after all. IYKYK 😉
The good news: these dogs are not in danger of losing their home. ❤️
They’re looking for someone who understands that they have spent their lives differently than a typical house dog and wants to help them discover the joys of being part of a family. I simply want them to have their own people — humans who can give them the attention, companionship, and love that I wish I had more hours each day to provide.
I'd rather answer a hundred questions and wait six months for the right home than place one of these dogs in the wrong one.
I am in no hurry. I'd much rather wait for the right home than settle for the first one. It’s a match-making process. 💘
If you think you might be the unicorn they are waiting for, please reach out. I would love to talk with you and make sure it is the right fit for everyone — especially the dogs. 🐾
I will be posting more pictures as I can and hopefully videos that help show their personalities.
