🐾 Case Study: Sophie’s Long Road to Healing 🩹❤️‍🩹

Sophie came to Pine Creek Vet after her owners noticed a bad smell and an open wound on her chest. A few days earlier, she had gotten into a scuffle with an outdoor cat, but no injuries were visible at the time.

By the time they discovered the small wound, an abscess had developed.

Dr. Zerwig sedated Sophie to clean the area. Once treatment began, it became clear that the injury was much more serious than it first appeared. A significant amount of unhealthy tissue had to be removed to give Sophie’s chest the best chance to heal, leaving behind a very large open wound.

Over the next four months, Sophie returned regularly for bandage changes and wound care that included:

💧 Hydrotherapy: Using a spraying nozzle in our tub to gently clean the wound, promote circulation, and support healing.

🔴 Therapy laser: Helping decrease inflammation and encourage tissue repair.

The team’s goal was to heal the wound enough for surgical closure.

There was also a deadline: Sophie’s family was moving to Norway, but she couldn't fly until her wound healed. Sophie’s dad traveled ahead to begin his new job while Sophie and her mom stayed behind to continue treatment.

After months of patience, careful wound care, and a tremendous commitment from her owners, Sophie’s wound was finally ready to be closed.

Sophie’s story is an important reminder that injuries from animal altercations may not be immediately visible. If your pet has been bitten or involved in a fight, contact your veterinarian, even if you do not see an obvious wound.

🎃 Can we build a great Trick-or-Treat Trail? Yes, we can! 🔨

Dr. Reese traded his scrubs for a hard hat and transformed into Bob the Builder, while our awesome team got creative and brought each room to life with its own theme. Guests traveled from the farm to the forest and even stopped by Gryffindor along the way!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening filled with treats, creative costumes, wagging tails, and plenty of Halloween fun. We loved welcoming our community into the newly renovated clinic and celebrating with our Pine Creek Vet family.

🔬 Behind the Scenes: Marv’s Ear Mites

We recently met Marv, a 5-month-old kitten who came in to see Dr. Reese.

During Marv’s exam, Dr. Reese noticed a large amount of dark debris in his ears. Our team collected a small sample and took it to the microscope for a closer look.

The culprit? Ear mites and ear mite eggs. 🪳

Ear mites are tiny parasites that can cause itching, head shaking, scratching, and dark debris. They often resemble coffee grounds. A microscope exam helps us confirm the cause so we can choose the right treatment.

Thankfully, we found Marv’s ear mites, and treatment began right away. Marv is another example of how a routine exam can uncover something that’s easy to miss at home. 🐱
