A quiet horse isn’t always a happy horse. And an obedient horse isn’t always a confident one.

We have gotten really good at measuring good horsemanship or training by how little a horse reacts.

Stands still? Good horse.
Doesn’t question anything? Good horse.
Does exactly what it’s told, when it’s told? Even better.

But I think we’re missing a pretty important question.

WHY is that horse so quiet?

Is it because it understands what’s being asked? Because it feels safe, confident, and comfortable in its environment? Because someone took the time to teach it how to navigate pressure instead of just flooding it until it complies and doesn’t react anymore?

Or is it because it learned that expressing an opinion wasn’t worth the trouble?

Those are two very different horses. And sometimes from the outside they look similar.

I’ve worked with horses that were loud and reactive about everything and horses that barely said a word. And the quiet ones aren’t necessarily the ones that have it all figured out.

Sometimes the horse that pins its ears, gets frustrated, walks away, or tells you something isn’t working is giving you far more useful information than the one that just goes through the motions.

Before someone runs off with the idea that I’m advocating for horses to have complete creative control over the program, I’m not. But they should have a say in it.

Boundaries matter. Expectations matter. Accountability matters. Horses still need to learn how to handle pressure, regulate their emotions, and participate in a world that doesn’t revolve entirely around their personal preferences.

But there’s a difference between teaching a horse to work through something and teaching it that resistance or feedback is pointless.

I don’t want a horse that’s afraid to make a mistake. I want one that’s comfortable enough to try.

I don’t want a horse that’s quiet because it’s shut down. I want one that’s quiet because its mind is actually at peace.

And I don’t want obedience at the expense of curiosity, personality, or confidence.

Some of the most rewarding moments in training aren’t when a horse finally stops doing something.

It’s when a horse starts offering something.

The goal shouldn’t just be a horse that does what we ask. It should be a horse that understands what we’re asking and feels capable of doing it.

I don’t think good horsemanship should only be measured by what we can get a horse to do.

I think it should also be measured by what the horse gets out of the experience.

Photo dump:
Had to use the old truck "Goldie/AKA-Flapper" to move the boys up to the hayfield today. They did a good job of cleaning up old dried up pastures on the homestead and it was time for some freedom. Two trips of three boys each (tight fit for the older pudgy boys😉)and all done!! Beautiful warm day but breeze enough to refresh🧡. The mares had to check out what was in the trailer the first trip and then it was "mheh" for the second trailer load. Loved seeing Xtreme actually run...until the meet and greet with the younger boys. They have been separated for the last few weeks. Photos are backwards to the order shot, the system is fighting me today 😳

It was time to advance Kiowa to the next level. Weaning has begun...Mama Treasure has joined the mares up above. Scary smart Kiowa knew that his Mama left in that grey metal rolling cave and really called for her when he saw it coming back. Roger will move the studs down in a day or so, but right now the "fuzz bucket" is busy eating hay.

Shawna Dishman-Hofbauer : Bullet had his first cow day and reports were that he did very well. He loaded up in the dark in another new trailer after spending his first night at the Flemings next to the weanling calves (he wasn't too impressed with those noisy bawlers😁)(Video in comments). Bullet earned his keep😉

The first ride...Bullet (Iron Natives second foal) is learning to be more confident so I videoed from inside - didn't want to distract him on this lesson🥰 Shawna's boy is making good progress. The heat kinda slowed everything down for a bit but now that Will's fair time is over, the pair are moving along💕

Another gelding, Chex Marked Ekalaka, started many moons ago by Lorna Marie Sheridan - first ride since years ago. Great starts and good minds and William had him going both directions and a nice easy back. He will need more miles but this big fella has a great mind💕

2026 Sweet Grass County Fair Horse Show.
William and equine companions Chex Marked Kootenai (Koot) & project K'Liga (a pretty flea bitten grey) did well today. Had horse fly problems with K'Liga in Green Horse but Will was granted a re-ride and stepped back on and they received a purple! Koot experienced his own fly problem but shook it off with a few hops and Will and Koot received purple too. Great morning in the cheering gallery🥰

Tried to post the album but can not find it so these could be duplicated😳. Moved Orion (the chestnut) down to the bottom to graze off tall grass and then I introduced him to Dakota so they can buddy up. Both boys were very good for Roger and led like champs🧡

Roger opened the pasture gate so they could go "Brush Up" and off they went 😁
