Tonight, while I was feeding hay to the horses, it hit me that Ellie May is 10 years old.
I found Ellie May 10 years ago during a storm in Cleveland on 787 while I was driving home from work in Houston. I tried my best to make her a house pet, but Ellie had other plans. Her Great Pyrenees instincts kicked in, and she chose the livestock. The goats became her family first, then the horses, chickens, and pretty much every other animal here at Happy Endings Sanctuary of Texas.
Over the years she has been more than just a guardian. She has been a babysitter, protector, nurse, and even a midwife. I've watched her stay right beside mamas during labor. She has helped deliver two sets of goat twins and several other babies. She stayed with the mothers, cleaned the newborns, and guarded them like they were her own.
She has spent her entire life taking care of everyone else.
As I looked at her tonight, I realized that 10 years is a long life for a Great Pyrenees. Many don't make it this far. She's done her job, and she's done it better than I could have ever asked.
So maybe it's time for Ellie May to retire.
Maybe it's time for her to come up to the house, sleep on soft beds, get a few extra treats, and let someone else worry about protecting the farm for a change. Maybe it's time for her to see what being "just a pet" feels like.
Lord knows she's earned it.
We'll see what Ellie thinks about the idea. Knowing her, she'll probably tell me exactly where she belongs. But if she decides she's ready to trade goat duty for couch duty, she's got a spot waiting for her.
Thank you, Ellie May, for a decade of watching over all of us. β€οΈ
