TAILGATE TIPS | Agility Exercises 🐾

A good hunting dog needs more than drive — they need body awareness, balance, coordination and confidence moving across different terrain.

Simple agility exercises like this help a dog learn to slow down, think about foot placement and move their body with control.

For young dogs especially, we like exercises that encourage:

• Balance & coordination
• Hind-end awareness
• Controlled foot placement
• Confidence on unfamiliar surfaces
• Focus and communication with the handler

Nothing complicated. Nothing rushed. Just purposeful work that builds a more capable dog from the ground up.

Those little skills around the ranch can make a big difference when the terrain gets uneven in the field.

Build the dog before you ask for the performance.

TRAVEL PLANS? YOUR DOG CAN HAVE PLANS, TOO.

Years ago, when Rich and I got married and left for our honeymoon, we sent Trooper away for six weeks of professional training.

We already needed trusted care for him while we were gone—so instead of simply boarding him, we put that time to work.

That experience became the inspiration for Train While You Travel at Devenney Ranch Gun Dog.

Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, vacation, cruise, ski & ride getaway, or extended trip, your dog can spend that time receiving individualized training, structured daily work, indoor lodging, and hands-on care.

Instead of coming home to the same dog you dropped off, you can come home to a dog who has spent the time learning, working, and progressing.

Opening day has a way of exposing every little training gap.

Sloppy recall. Breaking early. Rusty retrieves. Too much excitement around birds. A dog that looked sharp last season may need a little work before heading back into the field.

We just shared a new blog:

7 Signs Your Hunting Dog Needs a Pre-Season Tune-Up

If you’re wondering whether your dog is truly ready for hunting season, this is a good place to start.

Watch the control before the release. That’s the part that matters.

A reliable hunting dog isn’t just energetic, driven, or birdy. The real work is teaching the dog when to move, when to wait, how to stay focused around distractions, and how to respond when excitement takes over.

That foundation starts long before opening day.

At Devenney Ranch Gun Dog, we focus on calm, consistent handling, obedience, confidence, and real-world structure that carries from home to the field.

Better Dogs. Better Hunts.

Hunting season is almost here, and we have limited preseason Stay & Train openings available in Northern Colorado.

Hunting season is almost here — and the time to find those weaknesses is before you’re standing in the field.

At Devenney Ranch Gun Dog, we develop reliable, well-balanced hunting partners through structured, real-world training in the field and at home.

Nothing fancy today — just Rich, the dogs, and some time in the field.

And honestly, this is what a lot of dog training looks like: consistent reps, clear communication, and time spent together.

It all adds up when hunting season comes around.

Consistency builds the hunting partner.

A New Name. A Broader Mission. The Same Commitment.

We’re proud to introduce Devenney Ranch Gun Dog—the new name for our growing hunting dog training and performance programs.

What began with our love for Wirehaired Pointing Griffons has grown into something much larger. Today, we work with versatile hunting dogs of many breeds, helping each one develop the confidence, obedience, field skills and partnership needed at home and in the field.

While our training business is moving forward as Devenney Ranch Gun Dog, our Griffon breeding program will remain Silverback Griffs. That name represents our foundation, our dogs and the bloodlines we have worked so carefully to preserve. Silverback Griffs isn’t going away—it is becoming a distinct part of the larger Devenney Ranch family.

Devenney Ranch Gun Dog will now represent:

• Stay & Train programs
• Puppy and obedience foundations
• Bird and field development
• Gun dog training
• NAVHDA test preparation
• Conditioning and performance training
• Specialized training for individual challenges

Silverback Griffs will remain the home of our Wirehaired Pointing Griffon breeding program and future litters.

This new name gives us room to grow while staying firmly rooted in the training philosophy, personal care and respect for the individual dog that have guided us from the beginning.

Same ranch. Same trainers. Same commitment.

Just a name that better reflects everything we are building.

Welcome to Devenney Ranch Gun Dog—where dependable hunting partners are developed for the field, the home and the country they were bred to hunt.
