"What's behind the curtain?" you ask. It's our newest exhibition, "Manufacturing Victory in Arkansas," examining the six World War II ordnance plants located in Jacksonville, Pine Bluff, Maumelle, El Dorado, Hope, and Camden. It opens to the public on Friday, but drop by the museum this Thursday, May 28, any time between 4:30 and 7:00 pm to get a preview, visit with the curator, David Collins, and have cake and refreshments commemorating the museum's 25th anniversary.

It's a great night for a 5K race through the MacArthur Park and Pettaway Neighborhoods. Same day registration opens at 5:00 and runs through 6:45. After the race, stay for the presentation of medals and enjoy the pizza, Stone's Throw beer, lemonade, and music by Jimmy Lynn's Psychedelic Velocity.

There's still time to register for the MacArthur Park "History on the Run" 5K race on May 1. Pre-registration secures your T-shirt and saves $10 on the cost, but must be done by midnight on April 30. The 5K route includes both the east and west boundaries of MacArthur Park, the city's first municipal park. It's creation was tied to the closure of the Little Rock Arsenal in 1892 and an Act of Congress transferring the grounds to the City of Little Rock "upon the express trust and condition that said grounds shall be forever and exclusively devoted to the uses and purposes of a public park for said City." The park officially opened on July 4, 1893 as Arsenal Park but quickly became known as City Park. In 1942 it was renamed MacArthur Park in honor of General Douglas MacArthur who was born on the site on January 26, 1880.

For the last several years our awards ceremony has included Brooke Buckner of Channel 11. Join us after the race as she hands out medals to overall winners in individual and team competitions as well as 13 age divisions, male and female. Early registration is open through April 30.

Did you know??? The MacArthur Park 5K race takes you through the historic Pettaway Neighborhood, named for Dr. Caleb D. Pettaway, a prominent black doctor who lived on 21st St. Pettaway is a rapidly revitalizing neighborhood located between I-30 and South Scott Street, known for its mix of historic homes and new development. The neighborhood features a strong community vibe, the Pettaway Square commercial area, and extensive renovations. If you're not familiar with the area, join our racers on May 1.

This year's MacArthur Park 5K race will feature an added bonus - commemorative dog tags featuring the America 250 logo. All pre-registered racers will receive a set of dog tags when they check in.
