Our pets are experts at hiding discomfort and illness—which means sometimes the first sign that something is wrong is simply that they’re “not quite themselves.”

As pets get older, their healthcare needs change. That’s why regular senior wellness exams are so important. 🩺🐾

When you bring your pet to Briarwood Animal Hospital, you may notice that our technicians and doctors ask A LOT of questions.

“How long has this been happening?”

“Has your pet been eating and drinking normally?”

“Any vomiting or diarrhea?”

“Are they urinating normally?”

“What medications and preventatives are they taking?”

“Have you noticed any changes in behavior?”

You may wonder, “Why do you need to know all of that?” 🤔

Because your pet can’t tell us what they’re feeling—and you are our most important source of information. ❤️

A thorough history helps our veterinary team understand what has changed, when it started, how it has progressed, and what other symptoms may be happening at the same time.

Even seemingly small details can matter.

🐶 “He’s just a little slower getting up.”

🐾 What REALLY Happens During Your Pet’s Wellness Exam? 🩺

A wellness visit may look like a simple check-up, but there’s a lot more happening than you might realize!

When your pet comes in for their yearly exam, our veterinary team is looking at the whole picture to help keep them healthy and catch potential problems early.

👀 We start with a nose-to-tail physical exam
We check the eyes, ears, mouth, teeth, skin, coat, heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, lymph nodes, and more.

❤️ We listen to the heart and lungs
Changes in heart rhythm, heart sounds, or breathing can sometimes be the first clue that something needs further investigation.

🦷 We look at those pearly whites
Dental disease is incredibly common in pets, and oral health plays an important role in their overall health.

🐍 Case Spotlight: Copperhead Snake Bite 🐶

Recently, we had sweet Bella come to us from Vilonia after being bitten on the face by a copperhead snake. Facial snake bites can become serious very quickly due to swelling, pain, and the risk of airway compromise.

When she arrived, our team immediately began emergency triage by assessing the three most important priorities:

🫁 Airway – Is the patient able to breathe without obstruction?
💙 Breathing – Are the lungs functioning effectively? Does the patient need oxygen?
❤️ Circulation – Is the heart functioning appropriately with a normal heart rate, pulse quality, and gum color?

After stabilizing her, we followed an appropriate treatment plan with careful monitoring and supportive care. Thanks to her owners acting quickly and prompt veterinary intervention, she made an excellent recovery and is now doing great!

Snake bites should never be treated with home remedies or a “wait and see” approach. Even if your pet seems okay at first, venom can cause significant swelling, tissue damage, pain, and other complications. The sooner your pet is evaluated, the better their chances for a smooth recovery.

While we recommend calling ahead whenever possible so we can prepare for your arrival and ensure we can fit you into our schedule, we also understand that emergencies happen. We are proud to offer walk-in appointments and emergency care during our normal business hours to help pets when they need us most.

If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake or is experiencing any medical emergency, don’t delay—seek veterinary care immediately. Quick action truly can make all the difference.

🌡️🐶 Heat Stroke Can Turn Deadly in Minutes – Know the Signs! 🐶🌡️

Summer is here, and while we love spending time outdoors with our pets, the heat can quickly become dangerous.

Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency that can happen when a dog is unable to cool themselves down. Even a short amount of time in high temperatures, hot cars, or intense exercise can put them at risk.

⚠️ Watch for these warning signs:
🐾 Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
🐾 Bright red or pale gums
🐾 Thick, sticky drool
🐾 Weakness, stumbling, or collapse
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhea (sometimes with blood)
🐾 Confusion, glazed eyes, or acting unusually tired
🐾 Seizures or loss of consciousness

🚨 If you think your dog is suffering from heat stroke:
• Move them to a cool, shaded area immediately.
• Wet them with cool (not ice-cold) water, especially on their belly, paws, and underarms.
• Offer small amounts of cool water if they are awake and able to drink.
• Turn on a fan if available.
• Seek veterinary care immediately—even if they seem to improve. Heat stroke can cause serious damage to the brain and internal organs that isn’t always visible right away.

☀️ Prevention is the best medicine:
💧 Always provide fresh water and shade.
🚶 Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening.
🌡️ Test the pavement with the back of your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.
🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for “just a minute.” Temperatures inside a vehicle can become deadly in a matter of minutes.
