Proud of our pup Zettie! She Won the Qualifying Stake at the Kansas City Retriever Club this past weekend.

She is two and a half years old now, and she is doing great! As her veterinarian, I want to make sure she stays healthy and strong as she grows up and competes. Here is what we need to check on right now to detect future problem areas.

• Bones and Joints: I use X-rays to look inside her body. This helps me check her hips, shoulders, and back. We want to find any small problems early so we can fix them. She works hard every day, and I want her to stay flexible and pain free for a long time!

• Eyes: I recommend taking her to an Ophthalmologist. They have amazing tools to look deep inside her eyes. They can see small changes that regular animal doctors like me might miss.

• Heart: We can use special tools to check her heart. My X-rays can show if her heart is the right size, but other more advanced machines let us see inside her heart and how her blood flows.

If we act from a proactive position, I feel we have the potential to catch any small things early and keep her competing and hunting and thriving for a long time to come.

I few reminders….

1. Have you tested your dog for heartworms?

2. Are they on heartworm prevention?

Pictured below is my Prophet picking up a dove a few years back. I found out real quick afternoon dove hunting wasn’t made for Prophet. He just gets too excited and has a terribly tough time staying cool. Just like brief periods of overheating an outboard motor can affect the longevity, dogs are the same. Short stints of overheating and heat stress add up to long term organ damage.

If you want to keep them around for as long as you can, it’s best to monitor their heat stress tolerance and keep em cool. 2 days of dove hunting or that summer hunt test aren’t worth loosing your duck dog to heat related organ injury.
