Winter feeding is about more than the number of bales in the barn.
Plenty of hay? Great. But quality matters too. ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŒพ Your animalsโ€™ nutritional needs, body condition, life stage, and production goals all play a role in winter feeding.

October is a smart time to make sure your forage plan matches what your herd actually needs.

Winter asks a lot from cattle. โ„๏ธ Before the cold settles in, take a closer look at body condition and how your herd is handling changing pasture and forage.

If animals are losing condition now, waiting until midwinter can make catching up more difficult.

What lands in the pasture can matter just as much as what grows there.

September winds and storms can bring branches and leaves into cattle pastures including plant material animals may not normally be able to reach. ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŒณ

Some trees and plants can pose toxicity risks under certain conditions, making fall a good time to walk fence lines, inspect areas after storms, and identify unfamiliar vegetation before your cattle decide to investigate it.

As pasture forage becomes less plentiful, appropriate nutrition and forage management become especially important too.

๐Ÿ“ž Concerned your cattle may have consumed potentially toxic plant material? Contact Tri-State Veterinary Services at (860) 459-0986 for veterinary guidance.

One windy September night can change what your horse can reach by morning.

Storms and heavy winds can bring fallen branches, leaves, debris, and unfamiliar plant material into pastures and turnout areas. They can also damage fences and give horses access to places or plants. They normally couldnโ€™t reach. ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ”Ž

After rough weather, take a few minutes to walk beneath trees, inspect fence lines, look for damaged areas, and remove questionable debris. Mushrooms and other seasonal growth are another reason to keep an eye on whatโ€™s appearing in grazing areas.

A quick pasture check may uncover a hazard before your horse decides to investigate it.
