We had to go down the veterinary rabbit hole with Buck but we found answers and got a huge turnaround/improvement!
We purchased Buck late last summer, we did our deworming program, got him vetted and up to date on everything. He was put on alfalfa and mineral like all of our other horses. He was doing very well until around January/February when we had some of our worst weather, his body condition suddenly declined. It was not terrible and honestly I'm sure most people wouldn't have even been concerned but we noticed a change and I always want our horses to be their healthiest so I had his teeth done & a f***l done. His teeth were good and his f***l was negative. Tapeworm & bot larvae are not covered in a f***l so I dewormed accordingly just in case he maybe was having an issue with those. Waited a few weeks & nothing, he stayed the same.
So then we decided to go ahead and run several blood tests - cbc, cushings, epm and tick borne disease. Dr.Olivia got the results and said the only thing that showed was a moderate tick titer, which typically indicates past exposure to ticks but does not confirm active clinical disease. However, we were seeing clinical signs of something going on so we started him on a round of doxycycline and he is doing amazing! He's had major improvement!
I've had a few client over the years that have had horses effected by tick borne disease and it can show up in a variety of different ways. If you have a horse that is not acting themselves or suddenly declines, a few blood tests can sure be helpful in determining what is going on and how to treat it! 💛
