Dear Clients, 'tis the season: Dr. Dorothee will take her annual vacation to go and drink some decent b**r in Germany and get re-acquainted with her kayak in Maine. It's been a busy spring and summer, with well over 400 horses vaccinated and nearly 200 dental exams performed, as well as many other problems addressed and emergencies taken care of. The office will remain open for regular hours during this time, but if you need anything in particular before next Thursday please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.

This was a sad 4th of July weekend for us here at Rivendell. As many of you know our fantastic vet tech Josie had a bad riding accident last year in which she broke her back, requiring emergency spinal fusion surgery. We all here (and most of all her!) had hoped that her doctors' predictions of "you'll be back to normal" would come true, but as of right now she continues to have ongoing problems that are forcing her to leave equine veterinary practice. We already miss her dry sense of humor and her deep knowledge of everything Rivendell, and hope that she will eventually make a full recovery and be able to re-enter her dream field of work. Thank you, Josie, for all of your hard work and dedication, for the long hours and sleepless nights you spent with me (and many times without me) in service to our patients. It's just not going to be the same around here without you 😔

Happy hot and muggy weather! The weather is heating up and fly populations will start surging soon. While in our region that is usually just a ginormous pain in the rear, you all have probably heard about the New World Screwworm incursion into the southern US. And because there is always a lot of panic and misinformation associated with "new" disease outbreaks, I thought I'd post a few informative tidbits. First of all: NWS has thus far ONLY been found in Texas and New Mexico. Secondly, it is highly unlikely to move north, and almost definitely not as far north as we are. BUT: in order to prevent such movement from happening, a number of precautionary measures and quarantines have been put in place. ‼️️*These will affect clients who are planning on competing at the large year-end shows held in TX later in the year *‼️

NYS REQUIRES A CVI (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) NO OLDER THAN 5 DAYS for horses entering NY FROM ANY STATE WITH AN INFESTED ZONE, and animals that came from an infested zone have to have been treated with an approved pesticide. An up-to-date map of infested zones in Texas can be found here: https://tahc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/instant/nearby/index.html?appid=8455917e956b474f995cc3b94d3ef54b and an updated tracker of affected states can be found here: https://equusmagazine.com/equus-interactives/new-world-screwworm-tracker

Canada has suspended importation of horses from Texas, as well as horses that have transited through Texas within the prior 21 days

For in-depth information on screwworm and how it is being fought, check out this interview with NC State University entomologist and screwworm expert Maxwell Scott: https://cals.ncsu.edu/news/what-to-know-about-the-new-world-screwworm/

Happy Friday Everyone! I hope this first week of summer has been a good one for all. We have been busy seeing patients but I wanted to take a short moment to announce a new face at Rivendell: Welcome to Riley Bond, newly minted LVT. Congratulations on passing your national boards in your first attempt! She is replacing Taylor, who broke up with us because she found a new love: cattle 😄 We wish Taylor all the best in her future and are excited to train another future large animal veterinarian!

Squeeee.... It's that time of year again! Our first foal patient of the year is a total doll 😍 and makes up for the many dozens of vaccines given and teeth examined in the past month, all while getting ready for finals at SUNY. Yikes... If you haven't heard from us about this year's Spring Special it is not because we aren't offering it, but because we are booked solid. In fact, we may already have you on our schedule and just haven't had a chance to let you know 😆 The office just isn't the same without Dawn... Bear with us, and feel free to give us shout or drop a line to remind us!

Good Morning Everyone! Just a reminder that if you are tagged in a comment and encouraged to order a t-shirt that is NOT US doing so! I have very little control over who comments and tags, I can only go in after the fact and remove those comments. Which is a pain the rear and takes up a lot of time which I don't have...
Anyway, here is a REAL DEAL: if you purchased Equioxx or Gastrogard in the month of March (either from us or elsewhere) you should submit your rebate request to BI: https://www.boehringeringelheimequinerebates.com/ #/home
Happy Spring-ish 😆

Folks, our trusty Canon Pixma printer had to be retired and we have quite a bit of ink remaining. Anyone in need of 281 XXL ink cartridges? We have 13 total, message us if you are interested.

Do you care for a "mature" equine citizen? You know, the one who sometimes forgets how to horse because ... well ... huh? Who are you??? 👵🐴🧓We are offering senior special this month with 10% off all dental work, so if your 15+ equine isn't already on the schedule give us a call, and make sure to sign up for a great presentation by the AAEP on how to adjust you horse's care as he ages.

If anyone sees this hardworking young woman today go ahead and wish her a Happy Birthday! 🎉 Thank you for being the best vet tech ever!
