🐶 Could Your Dog Have Hookworms?

Hookworms are common intestinal parasites that can affect dogs of all ages. Because they’re so tiny, you usually won’t see them in your dog’s stool—which is why routine f***l testing is so important.

Signs to watch for include:
• Dark-colored diarrhea
• Weight loss or poor body condition
• Dull coat
• Pale gums
• Weakness or anemia
• Coughing or trouble breathing
• Itchy skin or irritation between the paw pads

Some dogs may not show any signs at all, while others can become seriously ill.

Dogs at higher risk include:
🐾 Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors
🐾 Dogs that frequently visit dog parks or other areas where dogs gather
🐾 Dogs that are not on a monthly parasite prevention

How do we diagnose hookworms?
A simple f***l examination allows us to detect hookworms and identify any other intestinal parasites your pet may have.

Treatment
If hookworms are found, one of our veterinarians will prescribe the appropriate deworming treatment and recommend a prevention plan to help keep your pet healthy.

Under current Oklahoma law, our veterinarians must maintain a valid Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) in order to provide medical care and prescribe medications. This means that one of our doctors must have examined your pet or livestock within the past 12 months.

If a VCPR has not been established, or if your animal has not been seen within the last year, we are unable to prescribe, dispense, or administer medications.

This includes, but is not limited to:

* Flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives
* Prescription medications and refills
* Other treatments that require veterinary authorization

Additionally, all patients must be seen in person to establish a VCPR before telemedicine services can be provided.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us comply with state regulations while providing the best possible care for your animals.

As if 6/3/2026 the New World screwworm has been detected in the US (Texas)! Animals should be monitored regularly and any wounds treated immediately. If you notice any wounds that are not healing please call us or your closest veterinarian!!

🚨 With the recent detection of New World screwworm in a 3-week-old bovine in Zavala County, TX, USDA urges residents to contact your veterinarian right away if you see any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations in your animals or herd.

If you see signs of maggot infestations in live or very recently dead wild animals, especially in areas near the U.S./Mexico border, please call 866-4USDA-WS (866-487-3297) to report it to your local USDA Wildlife Services office.
