What a week! We took a headfirst dive into all things working dog welfare and performance! Every dog made huge leaps in their skills and abilities, primarily due to their excellent handlers who willingly stepped outside of comfort zones and challenged long-held assumptions.

Pictured below is an active cooling station provided at a disaster training site on a day that peaked at 98°F. The summer heat requires that handlers closely monitor their working partners to prevent overheating.

Veterinary Tactical Group (VTG), an organization which teaches handlers across the country to provide life-saving emergency medical care to their K9s, specializes in working dog heat injury. I'm just going to put this right here..........
We have certainly selectively bred dogs for specific characteristics, but they are all, everyone on them, still individuals.

The moment we assume that breed or breed combinations equal individual temperament, we stop seeing the dog in front of us. And that's where both training and placement decisions go wrong.

We need to learn to SEE THE DOG.

Search and Rescue might be managed and set up differently around the world, but when it comes down to the mechanics of a dog detecting a specific odor, its a universal, international language.
I really enjoyed helping the teams in NSW Australia refine their handler and canine skills during the past week.

Im-PECK-able Discrimination registration is now open for April 12-14, 2024. There will be 12 full slots (handler and canine) and 10 observer slots available. Cost will be $600 for full participants and $300 for observers. You can use the link provided here or the QR code in the attached flyer.
