Some horses are just downright harder. And sometimes, the journey with them looks nothing like you imagined.
Some horses have strong minds. Some carry physical or mental baggage. Some fight you every step of the way, some lack the try, and some have an incredible amount of talent buried so deep that it takes years to uncover it. Some are passed from trainer to trainer, turned away time and time again, with everyone eventually deciding they’re just too much trouble.
And sometimes, you’re the one who refuses to give up on them.
It’s frustrating to spend years working with the same horse, attending clinics, taking lessons, seeking advice, and trying everything you can think of, only to feel like you’re still fighting the same battles. Sometimes, despite all your effort, the answer isn’t another trainer, another technique, or another shortcut. Sometimes, what they need most is time.
But it’s hard not to compare your journey to someone else’s.
You watch someone else reach their goals in half the time, seemingly putting in the same effort, or sometimes even less. They may have a horse with a better mind, more natural movement, a prettier build, or simply fewer obstacles to overcome.
And that’s one of the hardest truths about the horse world.
In the show pen, the judges don’t see the years of frustration, the setbacks, the countless hours of work, the money spent searching for answers, or the battles you’ve fought just to get where you are. They see the final product. They see the horse that makes it look easy, the one that moves well, stays uncomplicated, and gives them the picture they’re looking for.
And for those without the financial backing to buy the finished horse or afford endless professional help, that reality can be discouraging.
But listen: your journey is not less valuable because it takes longer.
You may not have the easiest horse. You may not have the prettiest horse, the most naturally talented horse, or the kind of horse that makes everyone stop and watch. You may have a horse that tests every ounce of your patience, challenges everything you know, and forces you to become a better horseman in ways you never expected.
Keep going.
Keep learning. Keep asking questions. Keep showing up. Be willing to change your approach, acknowledge when you need help, and celebrate the smallest pieces of progress that other people might never notice.
And when you finally get there? When that horse you’ve spent years fighting for finally starts to put the pieces together, when the talent you’ve always believed was there finally shines through, when you walk into that pen and accomplish what once felt impossible?
The satisfaction will be that much greater because you know exactly what it took to get there.
You earned it. Every inch of it.
So keep going. Prove them wrong. Prove yourself right.
No matter how long it takes. 🤎
