Hump Day calls for some camel facts!

🐪 There are 3 species of camels: dromedary, Bactrian, and wild Bactrian camels. At the Zoo, we are home to 2 dromedary camels, Michael and Courtney.
🐪 Camels can go a week or longer without water, and then drink up to 35 gallons of water at a time! That's about 44 times more water than the average person drinks a day.
🐪 The dromedary camel has one hump and the Bactrian camel has two humps. Camel humps are used to store fat, which can be converted to energy and water! This allows camels to walk long distances without resources.

Siesta the sloth wants to show you his target training! 🦥 🎯

At the Zoo, Siesta participates in positive reinforcement training. When Siesta touches his nose to the target, the behavior Keeper Emmett is asking for, he receives a delicious reward!

Training is an important part of our animals care. With this training, our animal care team can safely get them into positions needed for check-ups in a less stressful way. Plus training helps with daily husbandry, mental stimulation, and building trust with keepers!

This week, we're celebrating National Zoo Awareness Day and National Wildlife Day! 🐾 ❤️

Zoos are more than a place to see animals, as they play an important role in protecting wildlife and wild places. At the Zoo, we participate in breeding programs that help maintain healthy and genetically diverse populations and support on-the-ground conservation efforts around the world. Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA)-accredited zoos are working to make a difference for animals both here at the Zoo and in the wild.

As an AZA-accredited zoo, Lincoln Children's Zoo is proud to be part of a community dedicated to animal care, conservation, education, and protection of wildlife for generations to come. When you support your local zoo, you're supporting conservation efforts that reach far beyond our gates! 🌍
