My love affair with horses became a reality in the spring of 1973 in the form of a horse named Joe. He was a 3 year old pound-puppy of a horse, most likely part Quarterhorse, and I was an unruly ten year old kid. We were a perfect match. I used to love watching the farriers come out to the stables and shoe the horses, and I would stand right in the way and ask a million questions of that poor fel

low who patiently shoe'd mine. By age 16, me and Joe had grown some, and I enrolled in a farrier science class at school. The rest is history... I've been shoeing and trimming horses pretty much all over the country since then. Every horse teaches me something new, and every day is another chance to improve. Horseshoeing has changed a lot since 1978, when I first opened up shop, and I do my best to keep up with the technology, but the horses are still horses and I still love to keep em shod.

It was a busy Thursday at the Valcheck's barn! First we trimmed Luther and Ruby, then it was Hula, Goose and Bam Bam, each needing some special attention to their shoes. Hula has been off due to an abscess, so he got leather pads to help support his recovery. Goose needed radiographs to decide which direction to go with his shoes. He got a breakover shoe with 2° wedge pads. Bam gets special shoes that Bob welds ahead of time, we have christened them the Bam Bam shoe. We finished our day at Sugarland trimming Lily.

Just had to do a photo dump of some of today's cuteness. I do want to add, because we get asked if minis are cheaper to trim. No, they have all the same hoof structures as the big horses, but minaturized! It takes extra care to safely remove hoof material without damaging the tiny structures. All the same principles of balance, toe length, angles, all matter just as much. So, that's my two cents for the day.

We spent the day with these four horses, got them all set up with their individualized shoeing needs. .Maverick got extra time today, as we are collaborating with his Vet over a new shoeing plan. We spent time today photographing and marking all over his feet, so that she can see what Bob sees. Its important to evaluate what works and what doesn't when you are following a prescription. Keeping a horse in optimum shape is a group effort- the horse, the rider, the trainer, the farrier and the vet all contribute their own pieces to the big picture.

First day to break in the new chaps! When we were at Mule Days in May, we met John with Buckaroo Leather Goods, and designed some custom chaps. For a farrier, a well-fitting apron, with pockets in the right places for your knives, is a necessary piece of equipment. These fit the bill nicely! So much lighter and less cumbersome than the last pair he's been wearing.

Today was trims only, and we stayed in the Lincoln area all day! Lots of these horses here we've been doing for thirteen years, some since they were yearlings. These connections we form are the lifeblood of what we do. With the animals, and with their humans. This really is a 'family' business.

Its Tuesday, so we started at Cross Road Stables. We got an early start, and got lots of work done. We had a couple more stops, but are now home tending to our own animals. It's 103°
