Heading out, DSM? There's a Flood Watch in effect for many local waterways after all this rain. Beyond the obvious trail hazards, standing or floodwater can carry bacteria and parasites that make dogs sick (leptospirosis is a real risk after flooding). If you're walking near creeks, low spots, or puddled trails the next couple days, keep your dog away from standing water and steer clear of anything that looks recently flooded. We're looking forward to sunshine on the weekend ☀!

Today begins a hot and humid week across the state. A Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of central and southern Iowa, where heat is expected to be most prolonged throughout the week and persistent through the overnights. Several consecutive days of afternoon highs in the mid 90s are possible, along with heat index values from 100-103 and near-record warm overnight low temperatures in some locations. There will also be chances for thunderstorms at times mainly in the overnight and morning hours. Plan ahead this week, stay hydrated, and limit strenuous outdoor activity!

🥵 Temps are rising today and next week (91° and climbing). If you're out and about, bring water for both ends of the leash. A good rule of thumb: if you're reaching for your water bottle, offer your dog some too. Portable bowls and collapsible water bottles are an easy add to any walk kit - stop in to visit and grab one if you need it!

It's heating up out there, DSM friends! We've had a cooler stretch, but weekend temps are looking to rise again. We like to share this reminder periodically, because it's so important.
Before your afternoon walk, try this: press the back of your hand to the sidewalk or pavement and hold for 7 seconds. Too hot for your hand = too hot for their paws. When air temps hit 85°+, asphalt in direct sun can reach 130°+ within minutes. Stick to grass, go early/late, or grab a pair of paw booties if you're walking midday.
