On Sept. 13, Lincoln Animal Control received a call about a deceased cat near 40th Street and Normal Blvd. Upon arrival, officers found the cat in a pet bed under a tree and it appeared to be severely underweight. Officers located the owner via the cat’s microchip. The owner confirmed she didn’t have any cat food and the cat had been losing weight since April. She also confirmed she did not take it to a vet. The owner claimed she had been giving “people” food to the cat, however no food that could be fed to a cat was found in the refrigerator. Lincoln Police Department arrested the owner for felony animal cruelty. The cat was sent for necropsy and results showed it was severely malnourished.

Animal Control wants residents to know there’s help for these types of situations. Pet food pantries are located throughout Lincoln weekly. There’s no reason that someone shouldn’t be able to feed their pet. Myth vs. Fact: Swine edition 🐷

MYTH: "Pigs will eat anything, so they don't need a real feed plan."

FACT: Pigs are actually one of the more nutritionally precise species to raise. They're monogastric, meaning single-stomach like us, so they can't digest fiber as efficiently as ruminants. They rely heavily on a balanced diet of protein, energy, and key amino acids to grow and perform well.

The "pigs eat everything" reputation comes from their willingness to try anything, not from the fact that anything is actually good for them.

Getting the energy-to-protein ratio right matters a lot, especially during growth phases. 🙌
