I want to give a huge shout out Arnie and his owners. They have done things the right way, built great habbits, and have had great success. They chose a great puppy, they got that puppy into training right away to prevent problems, better learn to manage him, and get the best obedience training out there. Seeing them now with a free, happy offleash obedient dog is amazing! Now its on to all of the fun stuff for these guys! I love teaching dogs tricks, and really creating a thinking animal instead of one who just reacts! This is truly the start of such an awesome journey these folks are going on with an awesome dog!

What a wonderful story this one is. You know its funny how similar the horse world and dog world are, and funnier still how few dog people like to admit that, or perhaps just don’t even know. Airplanes, horse, mountains, rivers, dogs. No matter how good you can fly, climb, ride, swim, or train there always somebody out there better than you were on your very finest day. A lesson we all could do to remember.

Sport dog people does your dog barking really bother you that much?

I cannot imagine being the type of sport dog owner who micromanages their dog to such a degree that when they hear them bark in the crate, they feel the itch to go silence the dog😳. That screams monkey dog to me, and in a very suppressed BS kind of way. The guys who do that often complain that their dogs can't bark for more than 30 seconds without gassing out. Here's a thought, boys: maybe if you let your dingo bark more, they wouldn't suck at barking. Also, every trial you go to will have barking dogs; a lot of training has barking dogs; seminars have barking dogs. If you are such a control freak that barking drives you nuts, maybe Bitesports ain't for you.

Might be something to think about.

Few people ever touch the true extremes of the behavioral Bell Curve. Few trainers, few handlers, few people in total.
The extreme ends of the spectrum if we are just talking weak and strong are where you will see the best training because in either case mistakes are unforgiving.

This dog here is an example of a very well temperamented malinois dead center on the curve. He's out of our Pattern x Rani breeding and is a great representation of the stability and drive of those lines. He is 7 mo and very sensitive to his handlers but also very driven perfect for a sport or working home. He'd be a great dog for a beginner, and yes, I do like malinois even for beginners but it has to be the right mal and the right beginner 😉

So you want full power training? Well here's the good news. We can do that. Heres the bad news. A dog can only give you 100% of what they have in them.

For a lot of dogs 100% of their potential isn't a lot. When I run into this delima I always ask are we Team-Handler or Team-dog.

If we are team handler let's find a dog who will be able to perform and also push your training and handling further.

If we are team dog lets figure out how to get everything your dog can give out on the field.

Two different mentalities, two different equations, two very different but equally important outcomes.

Not all handlers are podium handlers, not all dogs are podium dogs. That doesn’t mean people with lower potential or dogs with lower potential in the sport can't recieve what they need.

Cheers guys.

Picture here is a friend and his Rottweiler we are working to make a better protection dog. This dog doesnt have a lot to give but that doesnt mean we cant achieve 100% of what this dog is capable of in the end.

Dogs have off days, they have bad days, bad moments, just like their owners.

When you are working constantly and the relationship between you and your dog is growing, don't let one off day indicate the end of the world. Whether we are talking pet dogs, or sport dogs, or working dogs, one off day, one mistake doesn't mean the end.

If something becomes a pattern recognize the pattern, and the contributing factors. Break down what you might be doing the exacerbate the situation. Try to understand the contributing factors and deal with them. Treat it as if it is both an artistic and a scientific endeavor because it is.

Problem solving is the most enjoyable part of dog training for me personally but that doesn't mean thats the case for everyone. I see people who are great problem solvers at home, at work, at school struggle to understand animal behavior.

So here is a great excercise to try if you find yourself stuck solving a problem you dont understand and you dont have outside guidance to spur you on.

Take video, and watch it back. This will help you to see the behavior from a different point of view. watch it back until you feel you understand. If you dont feel you've understood you haven't watched it enough.

That separation from the mental fatigue of the situation is often enough to kick start the thinking side of your brain.

The same can be said for a dog who seemingly doesnt understand an excercise during a session.

Putting them away for a few minutes to let them compartmentalize helps. Bringing them back out and trying again after youve both had a moment often leads to a better second session.

Just remember not to exhaust an unconditioned dog repeating this process too many times.

The big picture happens over years, not days or hours. The best training takes time.

Working Jimbo in some prey drive on the table today he fell off which is very normal for young dogs. Its good for them to learn the bounds of the table and how to recover when this happens. Over all I love what this puppy shows me thus far. BUT everything we're seeing here could lead to nothing in the end. Do I think that will be the case? Probably not, the dog seems very nice, but that thought lives in the back of my head for a reason.

I wouldn't show up to Monaco in anything less than a F1 car. Jimbo has to be an F1 car or hes off the team.

Every exception proves the rule. I cant remember who said that. However, it's true.

There are too many training systems already. The problem with the "training system" mentality is inevitably you will run into dogs that do not make using mosts systems easy, or even make them impossible to use.

These exceptions help to emphasize how the scope of temperaments is vaster than most trainers ever really discover. The extreme ends of the temperament spectrum are where most exceptions lie.

We try to avoid making oversimplifications when explaining methods during training, the problem is when you disseminate information to someone who lacks foundations, you HAVE to simplify it so they can understand it.

Alternatively you can over saturate the handler with theory. The problem there is training happens on the scale of tenths of a second and if your muscle memory hasn't been trained yet, your mind and reactions lag behind.

The current training trends lend themselves to folks who dogmatically follow training systems. At the core of all training philosophy should be problem solving. Not dogmatism.
