Dogs have off days, they have bad days, bad moments, just like their owners.
When you are working constantly and the relationship between you and your dog is growing, don't let one off day indicate the end of the world. Whether we are talking pet dogs, or sport dogs, or working dogs, one off day, one mistake doesn't mean the end.
If something becomes a pattern recognize the pattern, and the contributing factors. Break down what you might be doing the exacerbate the situation. Try to understand the contributing factors and deal with them. Treat it as if it is both an artistic and a scientific endeavor because it is.
Problem solving is the most enjoyable part of dog training for me personally but that doesn't mean thats the case for everyone. I see people who are great problem solvers at home, at work, at school struggle to understand animal behavior.
So here is a great excercise to try if you find yourself stuck solving a problem you dont understand and you dont have outside guidance to spur you on.
Take video, and watch it back. This will help you to see the behavior from a different point of view. watch it back until you feel you understand. If you dont feel you've understood you haven't watched it enough.
That separation from the mental fatigue of the situation is often enough to kick start the thinking side of your brain.
The same can be said for a dog who seemingly doesnt understand an excercise during a session.
Putting them away for a few minutes to let them compartmentalize helps. Bringing them back out and trying again after youve both had a moment often leads to a better second session.
Just remember not to exhaust an unconditioned dog repeating this process too many times.
The big picture happens over years, not days or hours. The best training takes time.
