Some of my favorite pictures of Maverick, taken by my friend Audra at the Friends of Denise ride last weekend.

Maverick is OBSESSED with water. He goes in, doesn’t want to come out, and splashes more aggressively than any horse I’ve ever seen 🤣 he very effectively cools himself (and his rider)!

I met Audra a few years ago when I was competing another special bay mustang gelding owned by my friend Alicia; Ivan! Audra’s mustang Seven and Ivan are essentially twins, and we’ve shared many miles together with the mustang doppelgängers, and spent a race or two with Seven and Griffin.

At the ride last weekend, I was preparing to head out on the last loops alone. Audra’s out time was a bit before mine, but as we were tacking up back in camp she told me, “I’ll wait for you. Four minutes is nothing!” I can tell you that sometimes in endurance, four minutes can actually be everything. But it made all the difference in my day to buddy up with her and Seven to leave camp.

I’m very thankful to Audra for the pictures and the company, and to Maverick for another great weekend of memories 🐎💞

A perfect Peggy Slew 💞

The more consistent I am with her, the more I’m upset with myself for letting her be on the back burner for so long. This mare is incredible, and dying to show it.

A flying linguine noodle 🥹

Tide is possibly the most wiggly horse I’ve ever ridden. She is hyper flexible, and every part of her moves. Getting her into alignment is like trying to harness a constantly moving target, but my gosh, when it all comes together is it amazing. I desperately need to get some lessons and will be making it a priority. Trying to knock the rust off myself while teaching a green horse is sometimes laughable, but Tide is the most game and willing partner.

I’m boarding a flight to head home from an amazing week of adventure in Wyoming. Traveling can be bittersweet for me since I love exploring but love being home with my animals. I’ve also, very luckily and through a lot of hard work, created a life that I really enjoy at home.

I’m flying home with so many new memories and a deep admiration for the state of Wyoming, but ready to see my pets, pick up work again with my ponies, and to hit the ground running with Maverick, Alicia, and Betty!

Somehow out of the many years riding and doing endurance together, these are the first ride photos Alicia and I have together (taken at Wild West). Hoping to add a bunch more!

An experience I’ll never forget; riding through the Bridger Teton National Forest with stunning sights of the Grand Teton Mountain range. Till the day I die, I’ll always believe the best way to explore the world is on the back of the horse, and the best view is between their ears.

Andy and I never stopped smiling the whole ride, and I was scheming how we could possibly ship his horse, Buckcherry, home to CA. My steed Shoshone was so cool, and is a hunting horse that’s seen many long miles. There’s something to be said for those dependable, level-headed, hardy mountain horses; they are worth their weight in gold.

Come ride the Tevis canyons on the infamous Western States Trail!

Robinson Flat 🌲 —> Chicken Hawk 🐔

Can you spot some iconic landmarks like Pucker Point, Swinging Bridge, or Devil’s Thumb?

If I’m being honest, my feelings towards this section of trail have been primarily negative. I’ve had some brutal trips through the canyons on various Tevis attempts that’s left me with trepidation and the mindset of, “you just have to survive the canyons.” I’ve rarely had the chance to enjoy them and take in how beautiful that area is. It is some of the most rugged, dramatic trail you will ever find. Yesterday for possibly the first time ever, I really got to appreciate the beauty of it. The wildflowers are blooming in droves on the steep, rocky slopes, and the crystal clear water of the American River below Swinging Bridge is mesmerizing.

Five of us set out yesterday from
Robinson Flat on the Campbell family’s string of endurance mustangs, and all five mustangs crushed it!

I am so proud of Maverick. This horse never backs down from a challenge, and the trust we’ve build with one another in such a short time is mind blowing. Maverick was not an easy horse coming out of the BLM corrals, and spent most of his life wild. Yesterday, I finished our ride out of the canyons in a halter. It was a moment of triumph on so many levels, and a reminder that sometimes the biggest wins are quiet. They happen in the forest when no one is watching, but if you’re looking for them, those are the moments and the wins that can mean the most.

Maverick would not be where he is today without Matt Zimmerman, the phenomenal trainer that took him on when many others would have likely turned him away, and thanks to the Campbell’s for not giving up on him.

The future is bright for this little bay horse with a heart of gold, and I sure feel lucky to be along for the ride 💛
