The minute I finished this 100 I was dreaming about the next one. Maybe something is wrong with people like me, or maybe something is right. Whichever it is, I’m happily at home on the trail, in the middle of nowhere, on a mountaintop or the middle of the desert. I’m happy sore, tired, hungry, and dirty. I’m lucky to have found my happiness and given the ability to chase it.

Here’s to the memories and here’s to the next ride, whatever it may be!

Virginia City 100 Ride Recap 🐎🏁⛰️

What a ride! The last time I was here was in 2005, I was 17, and the entire thing is a distant memory. This past weekend felt like my first time all over again!

I was incredibly lucky to partner with Niwots Dark Sun, bred and owned by Jacob Cukjati. I know Dark Sun well from the year we spent racing together in 2024, and he is one of my all-time favorite horses.

This ride was a mixed bag; in some ways incredibly challenging due to both the ride itself and various issues that kept popping up throughout the day, yet simultaneously smooth as Dark Sun and I kept steadily moving forward at a good pace. I never hit a low or felt bad. Dark Sun was strong as ever. We paired up and rode with different friends throughout the day who were a pleasure to share the trail with.

Before I knew it, we were out on our last loop into the darkness of the Nevada desert. Leaving the Cottonwoods, it hit me that we were going to finish this 100, however, I never celebrate any ride completion until the final vetting. My heart soared when Dark Sun’s final scores were all A’s and B’s, and the head vet turned to me with a smile and a fist bump saying, “He looks good. That’s a buckle!” We’d finished at 2:15 am with 18 hours of ride time, in 12th place out of 28 starters.

Virginia City is difficult, rocky, a real 100 miles, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything different. The ride management, vets, and volunteers are next-level fantastic. My two favorite stops of the day were at Jumbo Grade and Geiger Summit, when you need a friendly face and supplies the most and boy, did neither stop disappoint. Thank you all for being out there!

Thank you Andy for crewing and Jacob for crewing and letting me experience yet another amazing ride with your boy. Biggest thank you of all to Dark Sun; you are one in a million my friend. We’ve faced a lot together and you always dig deep to give it everything you have.

Another tough and magical trip through the Nevada desert, and one I won’t ever forget!

It is with the happiest of hearts that I want to congratulate Catherine Topping on the beginning of her partnership with my beloved Peggy Slew 💞

At the beginning of this year I lightly listed Peggy for sale. It was a heart-wrenching decision because this mare is truly an angel. She’s done everything I’ve ever asked and then some. Peggy is gentle, beautiful, kind, and talented. Despite all my best intentions, it was a struggle to stay consistent with her due to my racing schedule, work, and juggling life. It really began to weigh on me. Peggy is too nice of a mare to sit, and too wonderful to not be the center of someone’s world. I told myself I’d only let Peggy go to the perfect person.

When Catherine met Peggy, it was love at first sight. She was Peggy’s perfect person. Her riding goals, her philosophies about horse care, her desire to have a relationship with a horse beyond the saddle, it all matched exactly what I’d hoped to find. All of my doubts about parting with Peggy vanished, though I still fought back tears dropping her off yesterday.

Peggy, thank you for four amazing years. You have been a sweet and steady presence in my life and it’s going to take a while to stop listening for your nicker every morning. Thank you for giving me Dreamer, for being the softest nose to kiss, and reminding me that life isn’t all about accomplishments, but rather the time spent together. I know you will continue spreading your joy to everyone who meets you, it’s just who you are.

Catherine, thank you for loving Peggy. I couldn’t have imagined of a better family for her. Forever and always you and Peggy’s biggest fan ❤️

Some of my favorite pictures of Maverick, taken by my friend Audra at the Friends of Denise ride last weekend.

Maverick is OBSESSED with water. He goes in, doesn’t want to come out, and splashes more aggressively than any horse I’ve ever seen 🤣 he very effectively cools himself (and his rider)!

I met Audra a few years ago when I was competing another special bay mustang gelding owned by my friend Alicia; Ivan! Audra’s mustang Seven and Ivan are essentially twins, and we’ve shared many miles together with the mustang doppelgängers, and spent a race or two with Seven and Griffin.

At the ride last weekend, I was preparing to head out on the last loops alone. Audra’s out time was a bit before mine, but as we were tacking up back in camp she told me, “I’ll wait for you. Four minutes is nothing!” I can tell you that sometimes in endurance, four minutes can actually be everything. But it made all the difference in my day to buddy up with her and Seven to leave camp.

I’m very thankful to Audra for the pictures and the company, and to Maverick for another great weekend of memories 🐎💞

A perfect Peggy Slew 💞

The more consistent I am with her, the more I’m upset with myself for letting her be on the back burner for so long. This mare is incredible, and dying to show it.

A flying linguine noodle 🥹

Tide is possibly the most wiggly horse I’ve ever ridden. She is hyper flexible, and every part of her moves. Getting her into alignment is like trying to harness a constantly moving target, but my gosh, when it all comes together is it amazing. I desperately need to get some lessons and will be making it a priority. Trying to knock the rust off myself while teaching a green horse is sometimes laughable, but Tide is the most game and willing partner.

I’m boarding a flight to head home from an amazing week of adventure in Wyoming. Traveling can be bittersweet for me since I love exploring but love being home with my animals. I’ve also, very luckily and through a lot of hard work, created a life that I really enjoy at home.

I’m flying home with so many new memories and a deep admiration for the state of Wyoming, but ready to see my pets, pick up work again with my ponies, and to hit the ground running with Maverick, Alicia, and Betty!

Somehow out of the many years riding and doing endurance together, these are the first ride photos Alicia and I have together (taken at Wild West). Hoping to add a bunch more!

An experience I’ll never forget; riding through the Bridger Teton National Forest with stunning sights of the Grand Teton Mountain range. Till the day I die, I’ll always believe the best way to explore the world is on the back of the horse, and the best view is between their ears.

Andy and I never stopped smiling the whole ride, and I was scheming how we could possibly ship his horse, Buckcherry, home to CA. My steed Shoshone was so cool, and is a hunting horse that’s seen many long miles. There’s something to be said for those dependable, level-headed, hardy mountain horses; they are worth their weight in gold.
