Leash reactivity mistake #4: the arousal blind spot.

Below is a brief excerpt from the full article. Link to the full post is in the comments.

"The problem is that arousal isn't a behavior a dog can easily connect to a consequence. It's a state. Most people struggle to notice in the moment when they're getting worked up themselves. Asking a dog to make that same connection, that a correction is happening because of how I'm feeling rather than because of something I did, is asking for a level of self-awareness that isn't reasonable to expect. However, many trainers will initially disagree with me here because they will say that they've seen these corrections work.

What actually happens after one of these corrections is usually something else entirely. The dog gets more cautious. Trainers read that caution as success: the dog seems calmer, less reactive, problem solved. But I think what's really happening is uncertainty. The dog experienced something aversive and doesn't understand why. Uncertainty produces caution on its own, independent of whether the dog has learned anything about arousal.

And that caution doesn't hold. If the dog becomes more cautious, they trigger fewer corrections. Fewer corrections mean the uncertainty that was driving the caution starts to fade. And once it fades, you're right back where you started, a dog with the same underlying arousal problem you began with. It's a short-lived false positive, not real progress, and trainers who lean on this method often end up repeating the same correction indefinitely because it never solves the problem in a lasting way."

Alright, I’m going to say it because apparently it needs to be said. 😂

Stop choosing your next dog based on color and a short puppy visit.

“I’ve always wanted a sable.”
“I only want black and red.”
“I have to have a long coat.”
“But the puppy picked us!”

No. 😂 You met a baby animal for half an hour. It crawled in your lap, played with you, or fell asleep on you. Congratulations, you got puppy behavior.

You’re not picking out a purse. You’re bringing home a dog that you’ll hopefully have for the next 10–15 years.

And somehow people will spend more time deciding what COLOR they want than figuring out what kind of dog they can actually handle.

Then the puppy grows up and suddenly:

“Why is he so crazy?”
“Why does he need so much exercise?”
“Why is he destroying my house?”
“Why can’t I control him?”

Because genetics don’t give a damn what color you wanted. 🤷‍♀️

Especially with working breeds, you need to be looking at temperament, drive, energy, structure, genetics, and what that dog was bred to do. You need to honestly look at your own lifestyle and ask, “Can I actually provide what this dog needs?”

And this is where reputable breeders come in.

A good breeder has spent weeks observing these puppies. They know them FAR better than someone who met them once. They should be matching puppies to homes—not letting someone point at the prettiest puppy and hand over a deposit.

So if a breeder says, “I don’t think that puppy is right for you,” maybe listen instead of assuming they’re being difficult.

They’re trying to prevent you from making a 10+ year decision based on a color preference and a puppy licking your face for 30 minutes.

Pick the dog you can live with. Not the color you can’t stop staring at.

Because when that cute puppy becomes a 70–90 lb adult with an entirely different set of needs, “but I loved the color” isn’t going to mean a damn thing. 😂

Do your research. Know what you’re getting into. Be honest about what you can handle.

The right dog for your life matters WAY more than the prettiest dog in the litter. 🐾

Anyways this girl is looking for a fun sport 🏠

The many faces of a happy fulfilled puppy..
Remember training isn’t about always giving commands and thinking about what the dog can do for you.
Training is about providing the dog with clarity and FUN so you’re able to communicate and have a strong balanced relationship with your best friend.
