One of my favorite things about being out on the trails with my dogs is watching them learn how to navigate the world around them.

I want my dogs to explore, follow scent, investigate, and just be dogs. But I also want them to understand that not everything they encounter requires interaction.

They can see wildlife without chasing or harming it. They can pass another dog without needing to go say hello. They can be interested in their environment without acting on every impulse.

I don’t want to spend our walks constantly micromanaging them. I want them to learn what’s appropriate, understand boundaries, and have the freedom to make good choices.

To me, that’s a huge part of training. Teaching dogs how to live in our world while still allowing them to be who they are.

You see a lot of cute dogs here, a little training, and whatever adventure we’ve gotten ourselves into that day. But there’s usually a whole lot more to the story than I cant fit into a caption.

That’s why I love getting to share more in our monthly newsletter. A little about what we’re working on with the dogs, training tidbits, rescue updates, and the stories behind some of the faces you see here.

I write it myself, and I want it to feel like we’re just catching up and talking dogs which, if you know me, it’s pretty easy to get me doing.

If you’d like to follow along, the signup link is in our bio! Thank you for being here and caring about these dogs right along with me.

Most people come to us because something's wearing them down. The leash pulling, the barking at every truck that passes, the walk they've started skipping because it's easier than fighting through it.

What they don't see coming is how much more they enjoy their dog once that's handled. Clients tell us they're bringing their dog to the brewery patio, adding a second walk, taking them along on errands just because they can. Same dog, same personality, and now the walk is the part of the day everyone looks forward to.

Watching that happen after go-home day is one of our favorite parts of this job. Board & train details are at the link in bio.

One minute you’re bringing home this little puppy who trips over her own feet bites everything, and the next she’s all legs, stealing your socks, and acting like she’s never heard her name before. Oh boyyyy what did I do?! 😂 Somewhere in between, you’re getting to know each other and figuring out this whole life together thing.

That’s why I love getting to work with dogs through both stages of our Puppy-to-Adult Program. We get to meet that little puppy, help lay the groundwork, and then welcome them back as a young dog with a whole lot more personality and we already know each other!

We start with The Foundation, three weeks of building good habits, introducing skills, and learning through play, exploration, and everyday life. I want puppies to have room to be puppies while we help them learn.

Then, around 10–12 months, they come back for The Lead, where we build on those early skills, work through real world distractions, and work toward off-leash freedom.

Getting to watch them grow and helping you enjoy more life with your dog is one of my favorite parts of this job.

Full details are on our website link in bio!

I think dogs teach us something when we slow down enough to pay attention.

They’re never in a hurry.

They stop when something catches their attention. They get excited about the smallest things. They remind me that there doesn’t always have to be a destination to enjoy the walk.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons I love training outside so much.

Of course we’re working on obedience along the way, but I also think dogs deserve the chance to experience the world to move, explore, and simply enjoy being out in it.

I don’t think those things take away from training.

I think they make it better.

If you’ve ever trained with me, you’ve probably noticed I don’t get caught up in having the newest gear.

I like things that work.

The leashes I’ve been using for years. The treat pouch that’s been thrown in the back of my SUV more times than I can count. The long line that’s been dragged through the woods with more dogs than I could ever remember.

People ask about them all the time, so I finally put together a list of the things I actually reach for every week. Nothing fancy just the things I’ve grown to trust after spending a lot of time outside with dogs.

The full list is linked in our bio.

I think one of the hardest parts about booking a board & train is saying goodbye.
Not because dogs don’t adapt they usually do better than we give them credit for.
It’s because you love them. It’s hard not to wonder what they’re thinking while you’re apart.

Then pickup day comes.

They hear your voice, they catch your scent, and suddenly they’re right back where they belong.

I get to watch those reunions all the time, and they never get old.

I wish more people knew that part of board & train. It’s the best.

People come to us for behavior problems. Pulling, reactivity, not listening.
But most of what we're actually building isn't obedience. It's trust.

This is what it looks like when that's working. Not a dog performing a command. Just a dog who feels safe enough to be still, right up against the person who earned it.

Training gets you a dog who listens. Trust gets you this.

Want your dog to actually want to listen, not just comply? Try this.

Pick something that usually falls apart under distraction. Keep their favorite game out of sight until they hold it together. Then bring the game to life right there, not a treat, not praise a few seconds later.

Do that enough and your dog learns something bigger than the command. The hard moments are where the best stuff happens with you. That's what gets them checking in on their own instead of needing to be told.

A lot of rescue dogs come with a story nobody wrote down.

No history. No idea what happened before. Just a dog who flinches at raised hands, or won't walk past a certain kind of car, or shuts down the second a leash comes out.
We don't need the backstory to help them. We just need to show them, over and over, that this time is different.

That's most of what rescue work actually looks like. Not one big breakthrough moment. Just a hundred small ones, stacked on top of each other, until the dog finally believes it.

Second chances aren't a slogan around here. They're most of the job.
