🐾 Borrowed and author unknown, but this is so true!!

WHAT A BREEDER NEVER SAYS OUT LOUD!!!

🐾 People often think that a breeder lives among perfect dogs, but they forget everything that goes into bringing these little miracles into the world. Photos are sweet, but the reality is intense and demanding.

🐾 Every birth is a lottery. You can prepare, plan, and study everything… but not a single delivery goes exactly as hoped. Every time it feels like the first time, even after years of experience.

🐾 Death is our greatest enemy. A mama who develops complications, a puppy that doesn't make it. It happens unexpectedly and breaks your heart every time.

🐾 Using a good stud dog costs money and effort.
Travel expenses, matings, tests, nighttime care…

🐾 Hoping that everything goes well: diarrhea, infections, stunted growth. Breeding is an investment: financial, emotional, and physical.

🐾 Bottle feeding? Cute, yes… for the first five minutes. But after that, feeding every 2–3 hours, day and night, for weeks. That is pure survival mode, with a whole lot of energy as salvation.

🐾 People often view puppies as “business”: Number of puppies × price = profit!

But they forget the:
• Health & Genetic testing
• Matings
• Show
• Training
• Nutrition
• Veterinarian
• Care and hygiene
• Photoshoots, advertising, website
• Pounds and pounds of food and mountains of p**p!!

What is left? Rarely a gold bar. Let alone a decent hourly wage 😁

🐾 Sleepless nights are inevitable. No weekends, no vacation, no break.

🐾 Who really raises the puppies? The bitch… AND the breeder. Every small infection can threaten an entire litter.

🐾 And the question “Why is it so expensive?” If we got a dollar for every time…the dogs would be eating caviar instead of kibble or meat.

🐾 Future owners always make us worried. A puppy isn't a package you just send off. We choose adopters carefully; sometimes we refuse, sometimes we wait longer.

🐾 Emotional fatigue? We almost never talk about that. The pressure, the responsibility, watching over every detail…and the loneliness during an emergency.

🐾 Sometimes we want to quit…after loss, after setbacks, after exhaustion. Then a pup opens its little eyes… and everything starts all over again.
It is a passion that never lets you go!

🐾 The grief of loss…we rarely talk about that. But with every farewell, a piece of us dies with them. Yet we rise again, for the families still waiting for a puppy.

🐾 Yes, there are beautiful moments. Yes, there is immense joy. But behind every experienced breeder lies a path full of sleepless nights, tears…and an unconditional love for these special animals.♥️🥰♥️

More and more, I'm seeing veterinarians, breeders, and researchers recommend waiting before spaying or neutering Golden Retrievers.

If you have a Golden puppy—or plan to someday—this is information worth knowing.

And before anyone comes for me 😅, I'm not telling you what to do. I'm simply sharing some of the research that every Golden Retriever owner should be aware of. I'll link the actual study in the comments for those who want to dig into the science themselves.

🐾 Did You Know Timing Matters When It Comes to Spaying & Neutering?

For years, many dog owners were told to spay or neuter around 6 months of age. But research over the last decade has shown that when it comes to Golden Retrievers, the conversation may not be quite that simple.

Researchers at UC Davis studied Golden Retrievers and found that dogs spayed or neutered before 12 months of age had higher rates of certain joint disorders compared to dogs left intact. These included conditions such as hip dysplasia and cranial cruciate ligament injuries.

Why might this happen?

S*x hormones play an important role in growth plate closure and skeletal development. When those hormones are removed too early, bones may continue growing longer than intended, potentially affecting joint alignment and stability. Researchers believe this may contribute to the increased orthopedic risks seen in some large-breed dogs.

The research also found that female Golden Retrievers had higher rates of certain cancers when spayed compared to intact females. At the same time, remaining intact carries its own risks, including pyometra (a potentially life-threatening uterine infection) and the possibility of unplanned litters.

The takeaway?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

What I'm seeing more and more is a shift away from blanket recommendations and toward breed-specific recommendations based on science.

As someone who shares life with a house full of Goldens, I find this incredibly interesting. The more we learn, the better equipped we are to make informed decisions for our furry family members.

📚 I'll drop the study in the comments for anyone who wants to read it for themselves.

👇 Golden Retriever parents, I'd love to hear from you.

🐾☀️ BIG DAY for the GoldCountry Gang! ☀️🐾

Today marks a major milestone for these sweet pups...

Their first day soaking up sunshine. 🌞

Their first time feeling grass beneath their paws. 🌱

Their first adventures with new toys, cots, ramps, and a whole world of exciting smells. 🦴🐕🌼

Everything is new. Everything is an adventure.

Watching puppies experience the world for the very first time is one of those reminders that joy is often found in the simplest things—a patch of grass, a warm sunbeam, a new friend, or a scent worth investigating.

The tails are wagging, the curiosity is overflowing, and these little explorers are taking it all in one paw step at a time. ❤️

I'd say their first day of "big puppy adventures" is off to a pretty perfect start.

🐾 Which photo would you be most excited to see: exploring the grass, testing out the ramps, playing with toys, or puppy nap time after all the excitement?

Yes...we always recommend waiting 18-24 months.

🚨 Because someone has to say it……

As a Golden Retriever breeder with 15+ years of experience we are begging you - STOP letting your vet spay or neuter your dog at 6 months. Please read this before you make that appointment.
We have watched this happen over and over again. A family brings home a beautiful, healthy Golden puppy. Their vet recommends spay/neuter at 6 months. They follow the advice, because why wouldn’t you trust your vet right?

Then at age 3 their dog tears an ACL.
At age 5 they’re diagnosed with bone cancer.
At age 7 they’re gone.
And the research is now screaming at us that EARLY spay/neuter is a massive contributing factor in Goldens specifically.
UC Davis studied this. The results were shocking. Golden Retrievers spayed or neutered before 12 months had SIGNIFICANTLY higher rates of:
🔴 Hip dysplasia
🔴 CCL tears (ACL equivalent in dogs)
🔴 Lymphoma
🔴 Hemangiosarcoma
🔴 Mast cell tumors

These are not rare conditions. These are the exact things Golden Retriever owners deal with every single day. S*x hormones are not just about reproduction. They regulate bone growth, joint development, and immune function. Cut them off too early and you are robbing your dog’s body of what it needs to develop properly. Yet millions of vets across America are STILL routinely recommending 6 month spay/neuter because that is what they were taught in school 20 years ago. The science has moved. The recommendations haven’t caught up. Find a vet who will have a real conversation with you about timing. If your vet dismisses this conversation entirely, get a second opinion.

Your dog cannot advocate for themselves. You have to do it for them.
Vets, we respect you and we know many of you agree with this. Speak up in the comments. Dog owners, what did YOU do? Did your vet talk to you about timing? Did you experience health problems after early spay/neuter?

***these are just personal opinions based off actual facts and scientific research- however we do understand that having and unfixed dog can cause problems and sometimes there aren’t any other options other than getting the dog spayed/neutered sooner rather than later!
