When Summer Changes the Dog Walk

When the weather gets hot, it’s not always about skipping the walk — sometimes it’s about changing the walk.

During the hotter months, many dogs still get excited when the leash comes out. But even when they want to go, heat and humidity can catch up with them faster than we realize.

A few things to keep in mind:

* Pavement can be much hotter than the air temperature and may
burn sensitive paw pads.

* Humidity can make it harder for dogs to cool themselves, even
on days that don’t seem extreme.

* Older dogs, puppies, dark-coated dogs, overweight dogs and
short-nosed breeds may need shorter, slower outings.

* On hot days, a shaded sniff-walk can be much better than a
long, brisk walk.

* Always watch for signs that a dog is getting too warm, including
heavy panting, slowing down, seeking shade, or seeming
unusually tired.

* Carry water with you for your dog.

* Never Leave in a Car: Even with the windows cracked, parked
cars can reach fatal temperatures (over 120°F) in a matter of
minutes.

Summer walks and outings don’t have to disappear — they just need to become gentler, smarter, and more dog-led. 🐾
