Just a reminder!!

It’s that time of year again to start preparing for our 2027 Rainbow Bridge Calendar! 🌈🐾

This calendar has become such a meaningful way to honor the pets that mean the absolute world to us. Last year’s edition was especially emotional for me; just as I was getting ready to place the order, my sweet Hazel passed away. I was able to feature her on the front cover and update our logo to include her forever, but I’ve missed her every single day since.

This will be our third year creating this calendar, and it holds a special place in our hearts. Every calendar is designed and created by us, and we hope it means as much to you as it does to us. Beyond honoring our beloved pets, this project directly supports our small business and allows us to keep growing and reinvesting in what we do.

Submission Details:
🐾 Deadline: October 31st
🐾 This calendar is ONLY for pets that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
🐾 Click the link in this post to fill out the form. Please read all the prompts carefully so we have all the information we need!

Thank you so much for supporting our small business and allowing us to help honor the lives of the pets we love most. 🌈

It is heartbreaking to talk about the number of animals we’ve recovered after being hit and killed by vehicles. Since opening our business, we’ve picked up and provided a dignified end for almost 200 animals. Fewer than five were ever claimed, and only two were paid for as private cremations.

We didn’t start a roadside recovery business or an animal removal service. We knew we would occasionally help a hit pet, but almost 200 unclaimed animals? That is devastating.

People need to do better to protect their pets. Contain your animals; spay and neuter, secure your fences, do whatever it takes to keep them safe!! Their lives literally depend on it. And drivers: look up from your phones, slow down, and pay attention!

We never expected to carry this alone, but we refuse to leave these animals to rot on the side of the road. They were failed in life and in death, and they deserve better. While our Rainbow Fund makes it possible to care for these animals in their final moments, we still provide this service out of our own pockets.

Today, a dog was hit on E. Main in Richmond and left suffering in the gutter. An employee at The Milk House called us thinking she had passed, but she lifted her head. She was still alive! 💔

Through quick coordination, a local veterinarian helped us put her out of her misery. Our dedicated team member—who constantly donates her own time and supplies—never left this dog’s side. She picked her up, took her to the vet and stayed with her while she took her last breath, and brought her to us for cremation. Animals are living, breathing beings. They feel pain. As a community, we must do better.

If you have ever called us to help with strays, or if you feel called to help, please consider donating to our Rainbow Fund. We cannot sustain this financially alone.

This dog will be cared for and cremated with dignity. If you would like to sponsor her cremation, donate to her care, or give her a forever shelf, please reach out to us.

You deserved so much better, Penny. 🌈

Keep our sweet friends in your thoughts 🐾

There are weeks when the darkness feels heavier than the light. Weeks when the losses pile up, when your heart is bruised beyond words, and you find yourself searching for the ‘why’ of it all.

This has been one of those weeks.

We lost our sweet Lovey. She made it through surgery and had a week of playing, exploring, and experiencing what it felt like to live without pain. We hoped that she was on her way to the happy ending she deserved. Then came the panleukopenia and despite round-the-clock care, we couldn't save her.

That loss hurts in a way that is difficult to explain. Lovey had already endured so much in her short life. We had seen the possibility of a different future for her. We had imagined the life she would have, the love she would know, the years she would finally get to spend safe and cared for. Then, heartbreakingly, we had to say goodbye.

To everyone who donated toward Lovey's care, please know that we have made the decision to personally cover her expenses. We want every dollar you gave to become medicine, food, warmth, surgery, safety, and hope for another cat or kitten.

The same day Lovey passed, we lost our “Forever Shacker,” Benjamin.

Benjamin came to us torn apart by a raccoon. He was completely feral, frightened, and unsure of people. Over time, through patience and love, that frightened cat became something entirely different; he became ours. He greeted us every day. He followed us as we did our chores, he patiently waited for us to pick him up so he could burrow in and share his gratitude and love. It was an amazing transformation.

Because of health issues, we acknowledged that he would be with us for life. Several months ago, we realized he was battling a devastating fungal infection. Treating that inflamed an underlying kidney disease. We worked tirelessly to find the balance between treating the two diseases and to ensure he maintained a decent quality of life. Monday, we recognized it was time and made the heart breaking decision to help him leave this world. When it was time to go, he didn't leave alone or afraid. He left us purring and snuggled up in my neck…the place he had come to love the most. Of course we love every cat who comes through our doors, but Benjamin wasn't passing through, he was special and the barn feels empty and wrong without him.

This work is much harder than most people will ever know. Every day there are more requests for help than we have the time and resources to help with. There are emergencies, there is suffering, and there are countless decisions about who gets help and who doesn’t. While we do have a few incredible volunteers, the reality is that this is essentially two people pouring their time, energy, finances, hearts, and souls into an endless fight that often takes everything we have.

We are judged for what we do, criticized for what we cannot do, accused of lying, stealing, and not having compassion. All of that is especislly hurtful when the people making those accusations cannot see the nights we don't sleep, the tears we hide, the animals we hold while they take their final breaths, or the ones whose lives we fight desperately to save.

This post isn't about asking for praise, or sympathy, or money…It is about honesty. It is about letting you see the side that doesn't make it into pictures and happy adoption posts.
There is heartbreak here, there is exhaustion, there is grief.

We simply ask for understanding and for all our supporters and followers to know that if we go quiet for a little while, we aren’t giving up. We are simply gathering the pieces and regrouping so that we can keep doing what we set out to do.

Rest peacefully, sweet Lovey.

Rest peacefully, beautiful Benjamin.

🚨🚨 DECEASED DOG FOUND: Hit by a car across from the golf course in Liberty.🚨🚨

An unaltered male dog, greyish/silver in color, with cropped ears and a docked tail was found hit by a car. He weighs approximately 85–100 lbs (looks like a Pit Bull or Cane Corso mix) and was wearing a choke chain, but has no tags.

A property owner reached out to us for help, and we have picked him up so he can be given a dignified farewell. If this might be your dog or you recognize him, please reach out to us right away.

Due to his large size, we are only able to hold him until tomorrow. If you would like to help, donations to our Rainbow Fund help us provide care foe these animals. Our Rainbow Fund allows us to care for many deceased stray cats, but large dogs like this require significantly more resources.

Please share this post to help us locate his family 🐾

Update: Hercules' cremation has been sponsored. ❤️❤️ 🥺 and he has found his forever shelf. 🐾

We are heartbroken to make this post today, especially after everything that went into trying to save this sweet pup.

Over the last few days, a beautiful Rottweiler was spotted multiple times on State Line Rd near Gray Rd heading toward College Corner. With the help of some incredible rescue friends who lent us a live trap and a trail camera, we set up on a local property thanks to a kind landowner who gave us permission.

Unfortunately, a storm came through the night before we could get the trap set up. We placed it yesterday morning and monitored it around the clock, but there had been no sightings on camera and the property owner hadn't seen him since the storm.

Earlier today on the way to Richmond, I spotted a deceased Rottweiler in the ditch along 227 heading into Boston. While that is roughly 10 miles from where he was first seen, it is possible for a dog to travel that distance in two days. Based on his distinct markings, we believe it is the same dog.

Andy picked him up, and brought him back to The Heavenly Hound. We hoped we could trap him safely and find him a home. It breaks our hearts, but we believe he was dumped and then hit by a car.

Normally, unclaimed strays are communally cremated and scattered on our property. However, we wanted to reach out to see if anyone would be interested in sponsoring this dog’s private cremation so he can have a place to rest. We couldn't save his life, but together we can honor it and give him a forever shelf to land on. We have named him Hercules.

If you would like to sponsor Hercules, please reach out to us. If we are unable to find a sponsor, any donations toward our Rainbow Fund would be appreciated. Our fund is currently extremely low after picking up numerous stray cats recently and offering financial assistance to several local families in need.
