*UPDATE we are back up and running!*

Hello and hopefully good morning to the rest of you! We are having some technical difficulties and cannot access the internet or even our schedule. Our whole system is feeling a little grumpy so bare with us as we figure things out.

We here at Legacy try our best to show how much we love and value each other. Sometimes it’s shown in the fun banter around the clinic. Sometimes it’s someone bringing in treats. This year to start off Vet Tech Week, where we celebrate the staff as a whole since we all help in all places of the clinic, a mural was started where it features the staffs personal pets and even some clinic favorites. It’s just the beginning and more of our pets will be added, the smiles that spread through the staff was apparent all throughout the day and we all can’t wait to see where it goes from here! Happy Vet Tech Week to our fabulous team!

It’s that time of year again! Pets are showing up in their best dressed! This beardy came in as confident as a dragon with his wings on. Thanks for the visit and the smile Callum!

The first time shouldn’t be when you HAVE to do it.

There’s something stuck in between their toes.
An ear that suddenly droops and they’re shaking their head.
There’s a sore patch buried under all that fur that you need to get a proper look at.
Maybe that eye needs a bit of an inspection.

But right now?
The vet needs you to keep their head still for just a moment.

That’s a pretty difficult time to discover your dog really doesn’t like having their head kept still.
Or their ears lifted.
Or somebody looking closely at their eyes.

Maybe they’ve never really had any handling?

Because now it matters.
And perhaps it hurts too.

We practice so many things with our dogs that they'll use throughout their lives.

Sit.
Wait.
Come.

But there are other crucial skills that might sit in our minds that we don’t act on, but know we should.

Handling is one of those “I really should start” skills to have.

It can literally be seconds.
Lift an ear. Reward. Finished.
Hold a paw. Reward. Finished.
Part the fur and have a quick look at the skin. Reward. Finished.
Briefly hold the muzzle. Reward. Finished.

Then, once those things are easy, we can gradually make them a little more realistic.

Hold for slightly longer.
Look between the toes.
Bring a warm damp cloth near an ear maybe even make contact.
Reward.
Finished again.

All these wee rehearsals for things that may one day matter.

And there's another important bit.

Your dog doesn't need to prove they can tolerate it.
If they're becoming uncomfortable, stop.

Go back.
Make the next attempt much easier.

Because the goal here isn't to see how much handling they'll put up with all at once.
It's to make the handling itself increasingly familiar, predictable and normal.

Because if the day comes when you really do need to help them?
Or they need to see the vet?

It won't be the first time.
It’s just “another” time.

Every dog seems to have their own “absolutely not” bit, sometimes for reasons we’d never have guessed.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO RESTOCK HEART ❤️🐾

Our emergency response trailers have been heavily used, and now we need to replenish the supplies that allow us to respond when disaster strikes.

Wildfires, animal seizures, evacuations, and other emergencies can happen at any time. Your donation helps HEART replace critical supplies, restock our trailers, and stay ready to care for animals when our community needs us most.

Every donation makes a difference. If you’re able to give, please consider donating to our GoFundMe and helping us prepare for the next emergency.

HEART is a volunteer driven non profit. 100% of donations go back to the organization.

Please do not take physical donations to any location, including the Spokane Fairgrounds.

If we receive information about specific items that are needed or designated donation drop-off locations, we will share that information.

Please also be aware of potential scams and only donate through verified sources.

HEART is the foundation currently operating at the Spokane Fairgrounds and coordinating care and support. After speaking with their Board of Directors, we have been advised that monetary contributions are the greatest need at this time to help replenish supplies and support ongoing operations.

We will continue to share verified information as we receive it. Thank you for helping in a way that is truly needed right now. ❤️
