EXCITING NEWS! In 8 days, our forest fire fuel reduction project begins! We have partnered with the Department of Natural Resources to do a thinning of overstocked trees, & pruning of the bottom 10’ of understory. This will help reduce fire risk, promote forest health by reducing competition for nutrients and water in drought conditions, and reduce pine beetle and mistletoe infestations. This project is the culmination of 8 months of training, with end result that the ranch has earned the Stewardship Forest designation from DNR, with the recognition that we have a Forest Stewardship Plan in place, have taken coursework in landowner education on Forrest health from WSU, and will be taking steps thru the coming years to continue to manage a happy healthy forest! This first project will occur in the mares’ pasture, and partially into the Springhouse pasture,with other future phases planned for the other pastures as the budget allows.
AND…. won’t the horses love having more space to adventure up into the trees once they are thinned and pruned! Video is a preview of what this type of project typically entails. Enjoy!
