May we never forget that freedom isn’t free.

Today we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, our families, and the freedoms we enjoy every single day. At Ashley’s K9 Training we deeply appreciate the sacrifice, courage, and love that lives behind every service member’s story.

We are forever grateful to those who gave everything in service to this nation. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

šŸ”„ Marshall šŸ”„

Marshall is a 3 year old Blue Heeler. He is neutered and up to date on all vaccines. His former owners love him, but ultimately realized their lifestyle wasn’t the right fit for his needs.

Marshall is an incredibly smart, loyal, and affectionate boy with his people. Once he bonds with you, he is the kind of dog that will truly be your sidekick. He thrives on having a job, clear structure, and consistent expectations.

Marshall is a true herding breed, and we want to be very upfront about what that means. He does have a history of nipping and struggles with reactivity, which will require lifelong awareness and management. At times he can be defiant and push back on boundaries, this may show up as nipping/lunging when he’s frustrated or trying to control movement.

That said, these behaviors were unintentionally reinforced in his previous home for some time, so it will take consistency, structure, and patience for him to unlearn them. The good news is he has made great progress in training and is continuing to improve with time.

Marshall will do best in:
• An adult-only home (no children)
• A structured environment with clear rules and boundaries
• A home experienced with herding or working breeds
• A home without male dogs (he may be compatible with the right female dog)o

Marshall has a strong training foundation. He knows obedience, has good manners, and is off-leash trained. He is currently continuing to work on socialization and neutrality around distractions and triggers while he’s with us.

Marshall isn’t for everyone but for the right person, he is going to be an incredible companion. If you’re looking for a loyal, driven dog and can provide the structure and lifestyle he needs, Marshall may be your perfect match.

One thing I wish more people understood about young Service Dog prospects is that puppies are still puppies even when they’re incredibly smart, driven, or naturally talented.

Dogs under a year old are still developing mentally, emotionally, physically, and environmentally. A lot of people unintentionally put too much pressure on young prospects too early because they see polished adult service dogs online and expect their puppy to perform at that same level immediately.

But early service dog training should focus far more on foundations than perfection.

Confidence building.
Neutrality.
Environmental stability.
Impulse control.
Emotional regulation.
Engagement with the handler.
Recovery from stress.
Learning how to settle calmly in stimulating environments.

Those skills matter just as much if not more than advanced obedience or task work in the beginning stages. A young prospect struggling with distractions, excitement, frustration, or occasional overwhelm does not automatically mean they’re failing. Many puppies simply need maturity, structure, consistency, and appropriately paced exposure to the world around them.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is rushing public access too heavily or expecting puppies to work like finished adult dogs before they’re mentally ready. The goal should never be to create a shut down robot. The goal is to build a confident, adaptable dog that genuinely enjoys working and can navigate the world calmly and successfully long term.

Meet Sadie šŸ¤

Sadie came to us from The Dogslanding House, an incredible nonprofit rescue in South Austin and her story is one that’s hard to put into words.

She was severely abused by a previous trainer/owner and was rescued in heartbreaking condition… extremely malnourished and underweight.

And yet, despite everything she’s been through she is the sweetest girl. Dogs like Sadie are exactly why we do what we do.

We’ve donated one of our training programs to her, and over the next couple of weeks she’ll be staying with us while we evaluate her, build her confidence, and help her start fresh. Our goal isn’t just to place her we want to truly understand her so we can find her the right home.

We are urgently looking for a foster or adopter who would be able to take her in about 3 weeks.

Whoever fosters or adopts Sadie will also receive free follow up training with us so we can continue building on everything she’s learned and help set both her and her new home up for long term success.

If you feel called to help Sadie (or any of our rescue dogs), you can apply here:

She deserves a safe, patient, and loving home. Let’s find it for her šŸ¤

Arlo turned ONE while he’s here with us for his advanced training program!

Advanced training means we’re taking everything he already knows and leveling it up in the real world. We’re working on things like public training, off-leash reliability, longer duration and more distance with commands, more distractions, stronger impulse control, more difficult socialization, and honestly so much more.

This stage of training is where dogs really start learning how to make good decisions even when life gets busy and exciting around them. It’s about building reliability, confidence, and the ability to handle real world environments with their people.

For his birthday we took a trip to the lake and he had the best time celebrating while also getting in some training reps. Helping dogs learn how to enjoy life with their owners while still having structure and manners is one of my favorite parts of training!

If you want to be able to take your pup places like the lake and not have to worry about how they’re going to behave, reach out to us! I’d love to help you and your dog build the skills that create more freedom, confidence, and fun together.

A quick walk usually isn’t enough for dogs like GSPs, Aussies, Malinois, Border Collies, etc. These breeds were designed to work, so they need outlets for both their body and their brain.

Lucy would happily train, run, and play all day if we let her… and honestly, that drive is exactly what makes working dogs so incredible.

If you have a working breed and need help finding the right outlets for their energy and drive, feel free to message me!

✨ Welcome, Keeper ✨

At just 16 weeks old, Keeper is already a BIG boy and he has some even bigger shoes to fill.

Keeper has officially started training in our Service Dog Program and is being raised to become a future Mobility Assistance Service Dog for this incredible Leander High teacher.

Years ago, we trained her current service dog when he was just a puppy. Now, as he begins to age and prepare for retirement, it’s time to raise up the next partner who will step into that role.

When the time comes to transition from one service dog to the next, it has to be done with wisdom and foresight. You don’t wait until you’re in crisis. You prepare early.

Keeper’s journey isn’t rushed. It’s intentional.
And we’ll spend the next few years shaping a dog who is calm, capable, and worthy of the role he’s being prepared for.

We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence is not an act. It’s a habit.
This is especially true for working breeds.

You can put months, even years, into training.
Obedience installed. Off-leash reliability. Neutrality. Clear communication. But if you don’t use it… you will lose it!

Working breeds are not ā€œset it and forget it.ā€
They are genetically wired to think, assess, test, and push when structure fades.

A smart, trained dog doesn’t forget commands. They notice when standards slip.

Skipping reps.
Letting little things slide.
Inconsistent follow-through.
That’s all it takes.

Excellence in a working breed is built through repetition, and it’s maintained the exact same way.

Use the obedience.
Hold the expectations.
Keep the leadership clear.

Because training isn’t something you did.
It’s something you continue to do.
KEEP SHOWING UP!!!

✨ Marshall ✨

This blue heeler has been in our Behavior Modification program for quite some time now. His journey hasn’t been quick or easy. It’s been slow. Intentional. Layered.

Behavior work rarely looks flashy. It’s repetition. It’s structure. It’s rebuilding trust. It’s learning new patterns where old ones used to live.

There have been challenges. Setbacks. Breakthroughs. More challenges.

But the truth about dogs like Marshall is progress isn’t measured in giant leaps. It’s measured in small moments… A calmer response. A quicker recovery. A choice to look back instead of react. A softer body. A clearer mind.

Heelers are incredibly intelligent, driven dogs. When that drive isn’t channeled correctly, it can spill into reactivity, anxiety, or control-based behaviors. Our work with Marshall has been about giving that intensity direction instead of suppressing it.

Behavior modification takes time.
It takes patience.
It takes consistency.
And it takes trust in the process.

And when you commit to that process, it’s worth it every single time!
