This why the argument ‘my cat is indoor only, so they don’t need a rabies vaccine’ is not logical. Please please please keep their rabies vaccinations up to date.

LFCHD is alerting the public that a bat found near Pepperhill and Chinoe Rd (zip code 40502) has tested positive for rabies. The bat was found inside the kitchen area of a residence and was submitted Thursday, August 6, 2026. The resident reports that no people or pets were exposed to the bat. Environmental Health staff has posted Rabid Animal Placards in the affected area.

Rabies is fatal but preventable. If you believe you or a pet had contact with a wild animal acting abnormally, don't wait — contact us immediately.

Keeping pets indoors, creating a quiet safe space, updating ID information, and exercising earlier in the day can all help reduce stress and improve safety.

If you own horses, we encourage to turn on a radio and/or fan to help drown the noise.

According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes was detected in all unopened product samples tested by state laboratories. Several samples also tested positive for Salmonella and Campylobacter jejuni. The testing was initiated following a consumer complaint involving a dog illness.

The expanded recall includes all Raaw Energy dog food products manufactured between July 17, 2025, and December 23, 2025, as well as one lot of Beef and Turkey Medley manufactured on March 31, 2026.

The FDA also reported receiving additional consumer complaints involving illnesses in animals that had consumed the recalled products.

It is not common, but about once a year I read a story like this one somewhere in Lexington . This is why saying ‘my cat doesn’t go outside, so he/she doesn’t need a rabies vaccine’ is incorrect.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is alerting community members about a bat that tested positive for rabies.
