It is not common, but about once a year I read a story like this one somewhere in Lexington . This is why saying ‘my cat doesn’t go outside, so he/she doesn’t need a rabies vaccine’ is incorrect.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is alerting community members about a bat that tested positive for rabies.

Chewy is buying Modern Animal. This is a corporate group that owns 29 practices in Colorado, California, and Texas.
How is this relevant to you, in Lexington, KY?
Chewy has been collecting data on pet owners with every prescription they fill for years. They have this information to help them make a big move into the world of providing veterinary medicine.

Subscriptions. Apps. “Convenience.”

We’re not a subscription.
We’re not corporate-owned.
We’re not an app.

This is real veterinary medicine.

Actually paying attention. Thinking through the case in front of us—not running a protocol. No quotas. Not based on “production.”

No assembly line medicine.

Just experience, judgment, and doing what’s right for the dog or cat on the table.

And if you still want independent clinics, small businesses, and people who actually know your pet—support them.

Because once they’re gone… they’re not coming back.

A significant spike in searches for “my dog ate chocolate” was observed last Easter—and has been consistently seen across multiple years.

A large part of this comes down to simple access—Easter egg chocolates left within reach, hidden treats that aren’t found, or chocolates placed around the home and garden. Add in other common hazards like raisin-containing desserts, and the risk increases further.

For clinicians, it’s a familiar pattern. For pet owners, it’s a reminder that many of these cases are preventable—often just a matter of where chocolate is left and who can reach it.

We need to retire the “age x 7” myth.

Veterinary medicine considers a pet senior in the last ~25% of their expected lifespan and that looks different for every pet.

🐶 Small dogs often enter their senior years closer to 9-10
🐶 Medium dogs around 8-9
🐶 Large dogs around 7-8
🐶 Giant breeds as early as 5-6
🐱 Cats are usually considered seniors around 10–11, with “super seniors” at 15+

Why this matters
Because seniorhood isn’t meant to be a ticking clock. It’s a stage of life.

That’s when we start adjusting
• comfort and home setup
• nutrition and muscle support
• pain and mobility monitoring
• cognitive and emotional health
• wellness visits and lab trends

Earlier support can extend lifespan and healthspan.

Your pet is changing and they deserve care that changes with them.
