Sustained high temperatures directly accelerate the heartworm life cycle inside the vector. Microfilariae mature into infective larvae at a much faster rate, significantly narrowing the transmission window.

CAPC guidelines are clear: it takes just one bite from an infected mosquito to transmit deadly heartworms. Yet, late summer is precisely when pet owners experience compliance fatigue.

Beyond prescribing 12-month prevention, we can help clients reduce local vector pressure. Copy and paste this checklist into your clinic's newsletter or social feeds to help clients eliminate breeding grounds:

🏡 The Backyard Mosquito Audit

▪Clear Gutters: Debris traps water, creating an elevated mosquito nursery.
▪Refresh Birdbaths: Dump and scrub them twice a week to disrupt egg-laying.
▪Flip Pools & Toys: Store plastic pools and buckets upside down.
▪Drain Plant Saucers: Empty the overflow trays under outdoor potted plants.
▪Tighten Tarps: Ensure water cannot pool in the creases of grill or boat covers.

Summer is one of the busiest times of year for animal shelters, and right now, Lexington Humane Society is counting on our community to help us reach an incredible milestone: 4,000 adoptions by the end of June.

Whether you're looking for a playful puppy, an adventurous dog, a cuddly kitten, a laid-back cat, or even a bouncing bunny, the newest member of your family could be waiting for you right now. Our adoptable pets are located across our Malcomb Campus, EAC, and loving foster homes—all hoping their next landing place is a home of their very own.

Every adoption creates space for another animal in need and helps us move one step closer to our goal. Visit us at either of our adoption locations:
