Georgia Akita Rescue Division

Georgia Akita Rescue Division GA Dept of Agriculture/USDA/non profit licensed rescue focusing on purebred Akita rescue in Georgia and throughout the US as space allows G.A.R.D.

Georgia Akita Rescue Division is in it's infancy, but it is quickly forming. I am passionate about Akitas and rescue work, so it has been a long term goal for me to start an organization in Georgia dedicated to helping these wonderful dogs. Georgia is my home and always will be, and I want to lead an organization here in my State to help the residents and Akitas who also call Georgia home. I have

met amazing friends and dogs along my journey. I have learned the importance of following my heart, and at the center of my heart resides the Akita. I rescue for the dogs... not the people. While my focus is to have an organization officially in Georgia, I pledge my dedication to the breed throughout the country and the people who work tirelessly for the benefit of the Akita. As a professional in the Veterinary community, I am dedicated to the health and well-being of these animals and helping individuals find Veterinarians to address medical issues. will dedicate itself to partnering with any and all Rescue organizations. My mission is to work for the breed and those who love and support their needs. We are an official 501c3 non profit organization that operates solely on donations!

We had hoped to share a Gotcha Day post a couple of weeks ago for senior rescue, Toby, but instead we have to post that he is sadly- and we aren’t sure why- still looking for his forever home. With rescues, we don’t always know their backstory. We also know a lot of times they enter rescue with minor medical issues- or in Toby’s case- due to his size and age- normal senior Akita things. He was returned due to no fault of his own. We are devastated. He got along beautifully with the resident female dog, but sadly he was returned for conditions related to being a 7+ year old dog. His hips aren’t as good as a 2 year old. He could benefit from slow steady conditioning to strengthen them- we don’t know his history. He could benefit from joint supplements. He could benefit from some time and understanding. Toby does not have hip dysplasia nor any major medical issues. He had a very minor skin infection which his adopter got antibiotics for. But sadly, he is back in boarding waiting for his perfect patient forever home.

Please remember when taking on an older Akita, they aren’t perfect. We don’t know everything, but we know enough to know this dog is a gem. Please if you’re considering the most well behaved, dog tolerant older Akita, please consider Toby.

Sometimes our hearts need a little break to catch up with the trials and tribulations that come along with doing rescue work. But then, one day a trusted friend sends us a message and says, you’re needed, please help. Thank you Heather Zaresky and Georgia Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation for reminding us that what we have done does matter. And we are still very much needed.
So, we are happy to welcome Senior Toby into GARD.

Toby is a 7 year old male who found himself as a stray and was brought into the shelter in middle Georgia. He is an absolute gem to people, and is even very dog friendly. We know this guy deserved our help.

But, we do need your help. His boarding is $10 a day and he will need to be fully vetted. We would really appreciate anything to help us help this deserving Senior Akita.

After being in rescue for almost 5 years, we are super happy to announce that Tina and Jerry have foster FAILED (once again and we aren’t sad) and have decided to make KATIE officially a forever family member. We are so thankful for them, and we know Katie is as well! Happy Gotcha Day Katie!

Thank you to everyone who has participated in our long standing raffle! It was suggested that we do that instead of an auction, but it’s taken longer than we hoped! We have closed out lots of items that will ship soon. We have lots of outstanding donations so please if you could, send those in- we have two dogs going to the vet in the next week, so every penny helps!
