Hannah Selleck had a dream and a famous father. He agreed to help, but only if she promised one thing. ❤️
Tom Selleck famously quit Magnum, P.I. at the height of his fame to raise a family on a ranch in California. It was there, at four years old, that his daughter Hannah first climbed on a horse. By 14, she had to choose between ballet and riding, and she chose the horses.
Her parents encouraged her from the start.
“They wanted me to find my love and pursue that,” Hannah said.
Even so, she tried a more traditional path first. After graduating from Loyola Marymount University, she landed a job at a public relations firm in Beverly Hills. But she quickly realized it wasn’t for her.
“I was only able to ride on the weekends, and that was a huge shock. After that, I realized I have to do the horses, so I quit the PR job,” she said.
When she told her father she wanted to ride professionally, he agreed to back her, but with one condition.
“My father said he would help support me but that I had to turn professional, letting go of my amateur status, and work for top professionals in the sport in order to learn my craft,” Hannah told Palm Beach Illustrated.
She kept her promise. She worked as an assistant trainer, qualified for Grand Prix competitions and finished in the top five at events across Europe and the US. And behind the scenes, her parents were united in how they supported her.
“We don’t do anything or make any decisions without consulting each other. And if one of us makes a decision involving Hannah, the other parent completely supports that position, even if you disagree,” Tom said.
Father and daughter later built something together, a breeding operation that now runs as Descanso Farm. Hannah says her father was excited about the idea from the start.
“My dad encouraged it a lot. He liked the idea of developing the babies and developing young horses, so he was a big supporter of this idea,” she said.
Now 37, Hannah has made her own name in the sport, far from the Hollywood spotlight her father once stepped away from.
“Those horses have been a great way for me to have my own accomplishments outside of whatever my parents had done,” Hannah said.
He promised to help her chase her dream if she kept one promise. Years later, the farm they built together shows exactly how that promise paid off. ❤️
