• Scissor the legs for a softer finish rather than running clippers over sensitive skin

• Will they hold the dog down and push through the groom?
• Will they brush until both the dog and groomer are exhausted and upset?
• Or will they slow down, offer breaks, adjust their approach, and shave matting when necessary?
The best groomers understand that a slightly less “fluffy” or “perfect” dog who leaves happy and relaxed is always better than a beautifully groomed dog who is terrified of the next appointment.

When Grooming Becomes a High-Risk Service

Not every grooming appointment carries the same level of risk.

Some pets walk in healthy, stable, and fully capable of tolerating a routine grooming appointment.

Others don’t.

Sometimes it’s the 16-year-old dog with arthritis and a heart murmur.

Sometimes it’s the pet with a history of seizures.

Sometimes it’s the pet who requires sedation just to tolerate basic handling.

Sometimes it’s the pet whose health has been declining for months, but no one wants to acknowledge how much has changed.

These are the appointments that can keep groomers awake at night.

The challenge is that there comes a point where grooming is no longer primarily a cosmetic service.

It becomes a comfort service.

A hygiene service.

A quality-of-life service.

When a pet reaches that stage, the goal changes.

The goal may no longer be a perfect haircut.

And that’s okay.

In fact, if you’re fortunate enough to have a pet who reaches that stage of life, what a gift that is. Aging is a privilege not every pet receives.

The goal becomes helping them feel clean, comfortable, and cared for while minimizing stress on their body.

That may mean taking extra breaks.

That may mean modifying the groom.

That may mean stopping early.

And sometimes it means having difficult conversations that nobody wants to have.

The reality is that age, illness, seizures, sedation, and other medical conditions can increase the risks associated with grooming, even when every reasonable precaution is taken.

As groomers, we don’t get to choose the body a pet has.

We only get to decide how compassionately we work with it.
