The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine is advising that all dogs should be vaccinated for Leptospirosis annually. The statement by the ACVIM states, "Vaccines should be administered annually to all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age, regardless of breed, because leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, can be severe or fatal despite treatment, and exposure can occur regardless of age, geography, or lifestyle." Toxin Tuesday!

Friendly reminder: just because something is natural doesn't mean it's safe for pets. Many essential oils including tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, cinnamon, & citrus oils can be toxic to dogs through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion.

Symptoms to look out for:
*upset stomach
*respiratory issues

Essential oils ARE NOT a safe alternative to flea & tick prevention. They carry high risk of toxicity.

TOXIN TUESDAY:
Chocolate is toxic to dogs due to theobromine and caffeine, which they cannot metabolize effectively. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are the most dangerous, causing vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures, and potentially fatal heart arrhythmias.
If your dog consumes chocolate, contact a veterinarian immediately, as early treatment provides the best outcome.

Toxin Tuesday:
Rodenticides play an important role in controlling rodent populations, but they come with serious risks if not used responsibly. Improper use can harm pets.
Here are some signs to look out for:
*Unusual bruising or bleeding
*Weakness, pale gums, or fatigue.
*Tremors or seizures
*Loss of coordination or stumbling
*Nausea or vomiting
Symptoms may appear hours to several days after exposure, depending on the product.
If you suspect poisoning, treat it as urgent. Contact a poison control center, Veterinarian, or go to an emergency room immediately.

Toxin Tuesday:
Xylitol or also known as birch sugar is a common sugar substitute.
It is potentially lethal to our canine friends and can cause death in as little as one hour after ingestion.
In dogs, the pancreas confuses xylitol with real sugar & releases insulin to store the "sugar".
The canine pancreas releases 3-7 times the amount of insulin that it would normally release to address a similar amount of actual sugar.
Xylitol (birch sugar) can easily poison a small dog by a single stick of gum (depending on the gum). Xylitol poisoning seems to be limited only to dogs. Cats have no significant ill-effects from it.
If you suspect your little canine friend has ingested Xylitol, take him to the nearest vet as quick as possible.

Toxin Tuesday:

Let's talk Ma*****na (THC and CBD).
Ingestion of these products can cause a spectrum of symptoms, form mild lethargy & GI upset, to seizures.

The availability of these chemicals in an edible form makes ingestion & toxicity more frequent. Storing and handling these products as you would any medication will keep your pet safe.

If you feel that your pet may have ingested these chemicals, bring your pet to the nearest vet and BE HONEST about what your pet may have consumed. Veterinarian's goals are to make your fur babies feel better!
