Case Collection: Finn and his flipped stomach

Finn came to Hamburg Oaks Veterinary Clinic after his owner noticed some concerning changes at home. He was restless, uncomfortable, and was attempting to vomit several times.

We got him in and seeing those signs, quickly took x-rays, which showed a very distended stomach that was twisted (see the x ray image and the stomach outlined in pink). This confirmed what we were worried about: gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), commonly known as bloat.

There was no time to wait. The whole team acted quickly and Finn was stabilized and taken to surgery to untwist his stomach. This can be a risky procedure, but thankfully Finn did extremely well.

We are all so thankful Finn did well and has made a full recovery! ❤️‍🩹 His story is a great reminder of why recognizing the signs of GDV and acting quickly is so important. His owner noticed that something was wrong and didn’t wait, and that made a difference!

Summer might be coming to a close, but it’s still HOT outside here in Lexington! ☀️

With temperatures being so high, remember your pets paws are directly against the ground, and asphalt can heat up quickly! Before you walk, hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds to help decide if it’s safe to walk and avoid painful paw burns.

Try walking in cooler parts of the day (morning and evening), stick to grass or shaded areas, and always keep plenty of fresh water nearby! 💦

Stay cool, stay safe, and enjoy the last bit of summer! 🥰💕🐾
