We’re dealing with some seriously dangerous heat right now, and our pets feel it even more than we do. Please take extra precautions to keep your animals safe.

Make sure they have plenty of fresh, cool water at all times. Keep them inside or somewhere shaded and well-ventilated, and avoid walks and outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.

Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes. Remember that pavement can become hot enough to burn their paw pads.

Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, confusion, or collapse. Heatstroke is an emergency and can be fatal.

And if your pets are anything like Parker, they may think a little sprinkler time is the best thing ever. This splash pad was donated to the shelter, and our dogs are absolutely loving it.

Please stay safe, stay cool, and check on your pets frequently during this extreme heat.

WE DID IT! ROMAN’S PLAY YARD IS HAPPENING!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we have officially reached our $3,000 goal!

We are so incredibly thankful to everyone who donated and shared this fundraiser. Because of you, we should be breaking ground on Roman’s Play Yard very soon!

We’re still accepting donations to help with repairs to the existing play yard fence and any additional needs for the new yard that weren’t included in the original quote.

We have some wonderful news to share! Gypsy and Tater have both found their forever homes!

These two sweethearts have officially left the shelter and are starting the next chapter of their lives with their new families. We’re so happy for them and so grateful to everyone who helped them along the way.

Happy tails, Gypsy and Tater. You’ll always be a part of the Frances Hensley Animal Shelter family.

ROMAN’S PLAY YARD

Some dogs leave paw prints on your heart that never fade. Roman was one of those dogs.

Roman was the unofficial mascot of our shelter and a beloved part of our shelter family. Sadly, we lost him in January, but his memory is still very much a part of who we are.

In his honor, his mom and our board member, Crystel Carnal, has organized a fundraiser to build Roman’s Play Yard here at the shelter.

Our goal is $3,000 to make this play yard a reality.

This new play yard will give our dogs a safe place to run, play, stretch their legs, and simply enjoy being dogs while they wait for their forever homes. It’s a beautiful way to carry Roman’s memory forward by creating something that will bring happiness to so many dogs who come through our doors.

We also want to take a moment to sincerely thank everyone who has already so graciously donated toward Roman’s Play Yard. Your generosity means more than you know, and you are helping turn this special tribute into something that will benefit shelter dogs for years to come.

PET OF THE WEEK

Meet Thomas, a 3-year-old Lab mix who has been waiting patiently for his forever home since January.

Thomas is one of those dogs who is impossible not to smile at. When he gets excited, he does the cutest little pitter-patter dance, bouncing around to show you just how happy he is. He is incredibly sweet, smart, and eager to interact with the people around him.

Thomas is mostly housebroken and would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a loving, intelligent dog with plenty of personality. He also has a serious love for stuffies. He enjoys playing with then and then promptly destroying them! So his future family may want to keep a good supply of toys on hand.

Because Thomas would be joining a new family and every dog has their own personality and play style, we recommend a meet-and-greet with any other dogs in the home before adoption to make sure everyone is a good match.

Thomas is up to date on his vaccines, and all of his veterinary care has been completed. Now, the only thing missing is a family of his own.

After waiting at the shelter since January, Thomas is ready for his next chapter. If you’re looking for a sweet, smart, playful Lab mix with an adorable little happy dance, come meet Thomas. He may just be the one you’ve been waiting for!

Help us build a new playpen for our shelter dogs!

The sweet girl pictured is Gypsy, enjoying some time in our current playpen. Moments like this are so important for our dogs, but with our shelter almost always full, there simply aren't enough hours in the day for every dog to get the outdoor time they need.

Our current playpen needs repairs and updating, and having only one playpen makes it difficult to get every dog outside as often as we’d like.

That’s why we’re raising $3,000 to build a second playpen.

A second playpen means more dogs getting out to run, play, sniff, stretch their legs, burn off some of that kennel energy, and simply enjoy being dogs. For animals who may spend weeks or even months waiting for their forever families, those moments of freedom mean so much.

We’re asking our community to help us make this possible. Every donation, no matter the amount, gets us closer to giving our dogs more time outside and a better quality of life while they wait for their homes.

FOUR HAPPY TAILS THIS WEEK!

We’ve had an extra special week at the shelter because THREE cats and one dog found their forever homes!

And we have to give an especially big shoutout to our senior guy, Summit. After waiting far too long for his person to come along, Summit finally busted out of this place and headed HOME with his new family! Yay!!

There is nothing better than watching our shelter animals walk out the door knowing they’re going somewhere they’ll be loved, spoiled, and cherished.

Four lives changed. Four families made a little happier. And four animals headed home.

Thank you to everyone who shares our posts, volunteers, fosters, donates, and helps our animals get seen. You are part of every single one of these happy endings.
